July 4 travelers chase value as airfare falls

New airfare data show a sharp jump in economy searches and budget-filter use as Americans plan for July 4. Platforms also flag the busiest, most expensive day—Thursday, July 2—while identifying lower-cost destinations, including beach cities with average fares

Americans are heading into one of the busiest travel weekends of the year with a clear priority: make the trip work without overspending.

Expedia’s July 4 report shows economy airfare searches up 120% year over year and a 1,265% jump in travelers using budget filters. The shift is showing up in how people shop—not just where they want to go.

“This summer. travelers are less ‘where do I want to go?’ and more ‘how do I make this trip work?” said Melanie Fish. vice president of Expedia Group public relations. “We’ve seen budget filtering skyrocket more than 13 times higher than this time last year. along with more people using rewards. choosing all‑inclusive stays. and looking just outside major destinations to stretch their dollars.”.

For many, that tighter budget comes as airfares finally begin to trend down. KAYAK said the decline is the first time after weeks of rising costs, giving travelers a better chance to book an affordable getaway for the holiday weekend.

Trending destinations for the July 4 weekend

Expedia’s data points to domestic destinations with easy access to national parks and prices that are still within reach. The platform’s list of trending July 4 destinations includes Moab, Utah; Gatlinburg, Tennessee; Flagstaff, Arizona; Mariposa, California; and Bozeman, Montana.

Expedia also surfaced a mix of alternatives to hotter markets, including Mariposa as a way to reach park country without paying the premium that can come with more widely known destinations.

KAYAK is seeing its own surge in interest tied to big events. Searches are climbing for locales hosting major sports events, including Kansas City, New York and San Antonio.

The most expensive day is Thursday, July 2

Cost is where the timeline becomes brutal.

KAYAK said the busiest and most expensive day to fly is Thursday, July 2, with domestic airfare averaging 25% higher than on the holiday itself. The gap is stark in dollar terms: KAYAK data show the average domestic airfare on July 4 is $286, compared to $380 on July 1 and July 2.

That kind of pricing difference is why flexibility matters for travelers trying to avoid the premium that arrives before the holiday.

Cheaper options still show up for beach lovers

Even with July 4 falling at the peak of travel season, KAYAK’s numbers suggest there are still deals—especially if travelers anchor their trip around the right coastal cities.

For the holiday weekend, KAYAK listed the cheapest destinations as Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with an average airfare of $281; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, at $305; and West Palm Beach, Florida, at $320.

Hawaii is also a bright spot for travelers comparing fares year to year. KAYAK said airfare for Hawaii is down by up to $99 per ticket, depending on the island. Flights to Kauai are averaging $652, which is 13% lower than last year, while flights to Oahu are $671—9% cheaper than 2025.

The pattern behind the deals is pretty clear: as the holiday approaches. people are leaning harder into bargains—filtering budgets. using rewards. and adjusting plans just enough to find cheaper flights. The result is a travel market where the “best destination” increasingly depends on what you can afford on the dates that cost the most.
