On July 4, the clock starts ticking earlier than many travelers expect at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority says no planes will take off or land at Reagan National after noon, with no flights scheduled during that window. Terminal services will be limited until flights resume July 5.

For people planning around Independence Day—when airspace can tighten without much warning—this is the kind of disruption that can turn a normal travel day into a stressful scramble. The authority’s passenger advisory points travelers to the skies above the National Mall and beyond. where the summer’s biggest displays often come with military flyovers. fireworks. and parachute jumps.

That advisory also includes a heads-up for July 3. Flight operations will be suspended for several hours in the early afternoon on July 3, setting up a two-day stretch when the airport could feel much less like an everyday gateway and more like a controlled corridor.

The authority said the events most likely to affect travelers through Reagan National are the July 3 and 4 aerial rehearsals, performances, and fireworks. It also warned that other airspace closures are expected to last a limited duration and have limited impact.

Several other dates are already in play this summer and could bring additional temporary holds—whether tied to celebrations or the weather. The advisory lists the opening of the Great American State Fair on June 24 and 25. along with a Military Appreciation Day on June 28. It also points to a Great American State Fair closeout flyover and parachute jump on July 10.

For later in the season, the authority flagged the Grand Prix near the National Mall scheduled for Aug. 22-23.

Airlines have already adjusted some schedules for events including the June 24-25 Great American State Fair opening. the July 4 fireworks. and the Aug. 22-23 Grand Prix near the National Mall. Still, the authority cautioned that additional temporary holds—due to celebrations or weather—could delay passengers.

  1. Wait so they stop flights after noon on July 4, but then say it resumes July 5. That’s like all day travel ruined. I don’t get why they can’t just keep taking landings like normal, fireworks aren’t even during the flight.

  2. My cousin said it’s because of the military flyovers, but this article makes it sound like a rehearsal + fireworks are basically gonna block the whole sky. Also it mentions July 3 early afternoon too, so if you’re flying in the day before, are they gonna cancel randomly or what? I always thought Reagan was less strict than Dulles…

  3. So basically the airport is doing a “controlled corridor” thing? Love how they say other airspace closures are expected to be limited like that helps. Meanwhile Great American State Fair AND Grand Prix in Aug… it’s like they’re running DC traffic training school all summer. If you’re traveling, just assume flights are gonna get nuked. I’m checking my airline but yeah, good luck.
