Judge clears way for UFC Freedom 250 bouts on White House lawn

A federal judge ruled that UFC Freedom 250 can proceed on the White House grounds on June 14 after rejecting an emergency effort to halt the fight card and related events, including construction on the South Lawn and a June 12 news conference at the Lincoln Me

The temporary steel-and-rails arena—called the “Claw” by critics—was already being assembled on the White House’s South Lawn when a federal judge decided it was too late, and too unsupported, to stop UFC Freedom 250 from going forward.

Judge Amit Mehta. in Washington. D.C. ruled that the UFC event can be held on the White House grounds on June 14. Mehta also declined to issue a preliminary injunction that would have blocked the June 14 fight card. further construction of the structure on the South Lawn. and a pre-fight news conference at the Lincoln Memorial scheduled for June 12.

The legal challenge came from the Public Integrity Project, which filed suit arguing that decisions by the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service permitting the event violated federal law and the Park Service’s own regulations.

Mehta acknowledged that critics had described the “Claw” using harsh language—calling it “hideous,” “grotesque” and “disgusting”—but said they failed to show they were “directly affected” by the government’s actions.

Even if the plaintiffs had established standing, Mehta said emergency relief still would not be granted because they did not prove irreparable harm. He pointed to the temporary nature of the construction, writing that the Claw will be disassembled beginning at 10 a.m. on June 15, 2026.

Timing also weighed against the request. Mehta said the critics waited too long to file the lawsuit, which was submitted on June 7.

On the environmental issue, Mehta said the critics had not identified environmental damage significant enough to justify canceling the event. In his ruling, Mehta noted that the UFC estimates it will spend $700,000 to restore grass damaged by the Claw on the South Lawn.

The lawsuit also argued that the UFC Freedom 250 did not qualify under a temporary rule allowing events celebrating America 250. The filing contended the event is being run by the UFC rather than by “executive departments and agencies or the Semiquincentennial Commission for the celebration of the 250th anniversary of American Independence.” The suit further stated that the only special event allowed at the Lincoln Memorial is a celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.

UFC Freedom 250 will feature Justin Gaethje vs. Ilia Topuria.

The bout is set for Sunday, June 14, at 8 p.m. ET on the White House (South Lawn). The event will stream on Paramount, free with subscription, starting at $.99/month.

As the case ends for now—at least at the emergency stage—the fight card remains scheduled, the South Lawn construction is allowed to continue, and the June 12 news conference at the Lincoln Memorial is still on the calendar.

  1. Judge said it’s too late and they didn’t prove harm… but like, it’s still the White House? I feel like that part doesn’t matter, it’s gonna mess up the vibes. Also why is a news conference at the Lincoln Memorial even part of this??

  2. Wait so the arena gets disassembled in 2026? That sounds like they’re already planning far out or the article is mixing up dates. And if people said it was “disgusting” but didn’t get “directly affected,” then what, we’re just supposed to shut up until damage happens? Public Integrity Project sounds like a made up name tbh.

  3. Mehta cleared it, because the lawsuit was filed June 7 and the judge’s like nope not emergency enough. But isn’t this whole thing literally an emergency if they’re putting the cage on federal property? Plus I saw someone say the “Claw” is gonna stay there forever which… obviously not? Idk, I’m just mad they’re doing UFC right on the White House lawn like that’s normal.
