Juan Soto praised as “best player” after Mets win

Interim Mets manager Andy Green didn’t hold back after Juan Soto helped New York beat the Phillies 6-2 on Saturday night, calling the star “the best player in baseball.” The Mets improved to a 35-48 record after Green took over following Carlos Mendoza’s firin
Saturday night wasn’t just another win for the New York Mets. It was the kind of performance that made interim manager Andy Green sound almost surprised by how good Juan Soto looked—at-bat after at-bat, pitch after pitch.
In the Mets’ 6-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Soto backed up the hype with an outing Green directly tied to his own start as manager. Green took over the job on an interim basis after the Mets fired Carlos Mendoza. and this one became his first win in the role. Soto finished 2-for-3 at the plate for one RBI and one walk.
Green’s praise went beyond the box score. After the game. he called Soto the best player in baseball. emphasizing how unusual and watchable his approach is even in moments when triples don’t show up every inning. “He’s the best player in baseball. It’s special what he does in the batter’s box. Triples probably aren’t the thing that we’re going to see all day long from him. but his every at-bat is must-watch TV. because it’s just that good to watch the professional at-bats. I mean. it gets a really tough lefty from a really weird slot. and you can see he’s getting comfortable and shuffling in there and finding his way. It’s fun to watch. so whatever the situation is. when you have players that’s special. it’s fun. ” Green said.
Soto is now in the ninth year of his major league career, and it’s his second season with the Mets. New York has leaned on that kind of offensive presence as it tries to climb out of what’s been a slow start to the 2026 season.
The result helped immediately. The Mets improved to a 35-48 record, but they still find themselves at the bottom of the NL East Division standings. They are currently behind the Washington Nationals and the Miami Marlins.
With the series against their division rival still going, the Mets’ next chance to build momentum comes quickly. Game 3 against the Phillies is scheduled for June 28 at 1:40 p.m. ET. a matchup that arrives with the Mets looking to keep the pressure on and show that Saturday’s 6-2 win wasn’t a one-off moment.

Best player in baseball?? Sure but 6-2 is still 6-2 lol
I swear Mets games are always weird at first then suddenly they’re winning. Soto looks locked in though, like he always knows what pitch is coming. Also interim managers always talk big after one win 😂
So Green got fired before? or Mendoza got fired Saturday night and then Green already had the win, okay I get it. But calling him best in baseball feels like a stretch when they’re still 35-48 and last in the division. Don’t get me wrong Soto’s good, just think the team record matters more than one series.
“Triples probably aren’t the thing” lol okay but I feel like triples are the only stat people care about? Mets fans gonna be like he’s special then still forget he didn’t hit a triple. I don’t even know why lefty from a weird slot matters, sounds like baseball magic. Anyway hopefully they don’t go back to sucking after the June 28 game.
