Could Jordan Love be soft launching the next step in his career?
The Green Bay Packers’ 27-year-old quarterback doubtless has plenty of years left in his playing career, but he showed off his coaching chops as an offensive play-caller during his team’s preseason finale on Friday, Aug. 28.
According to Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, Green Bay let Love call all of the offensive plays during the second half against the Arizona Cardinals.
When Love took over play-calling duties, his team held a 24-20 lead. After the third quarter, Packers offensive miscues – a holding call, sack, punt and then a fumble – allowed Arizona to flip the script and take a 31-24 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Green Bay’s Love-called offense scored on every possession and put up 18 total points. Love’s night on the headset culminated with a go-ahead, game-winning touchdown with 20 seconds left in the game.
“That was pretty cool, just to hear his demeanor on the headset, and how calm, cool and collected he was throughout the entire game,” LaFleur said after the game. “Especially in those critical moments. It’s not a surprise to me because that’s what we see on the field too.”
Love’s success as a play-caller was notable both because it was his first time doing so and because he barely had time to prepare for it. LaFleur told reporters that he didn’t ask his quarterback about calling plays until right before the game – he was “kind of messing with” Love when he asked, he said. But Love was up for the challenge and called plays on the fly for the second half.
The win gave the Packers a second win to end the preseason. They conclude the exhibition schedule with a 2-1 record and still have a couple of weeks before a regular-season opener against the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 13.
For Love, Green Bay’s next game will mark the start of his sixth season in the NFL – and fourth as the Packers’ full-time starter. In the three years since taking over from Aaron Rodgers, Love has a 64.5% completion rate, 10,929 passing yards, 80 touchdowns and 28 interceptions.
