A Milwaukee teen whose disappearance in 2022 drew national attention was reportedly found safe on Tuesday, June 30, after years of uncertainty that captured the attention of true-crime followers.

Local news outlets, citing police sources, said Joniah Walker—then 15 years old—has been found safe. Police only confirmed that she was safe, and it wasn’t immediately clear where she was found or how she was discovered.

The disappearance of Joniah Walker had already been the subject of a missing child alert connected with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. The organization had been asking for help locating the Milwaukee teenager, saying she disappeared from her home on June 23. NCMEC urged anyone with information to call 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678).

Walker was last seen on the north side of Milwaukee. When she vanished in June 2022. the case became a hot-button issue at the time. unfolding amid a rash of disappearances and murders of Black women and girls in the Midwest state. Over the years, the mystery around her disappearance continued to draw interest from true crime enthusiasts.

When Walker disappeared more than four years ago, she left behind few clues. A neighbor’s Ring camera recorded her on the way out at about 2:30 p.m., showing her leaving the house with a large backpack. That image was captured about 90 minutes before her father came by.

Her mother was at work when Walker disappeared, and her father was expected to pick her up to take her to get a work permit. Walker’s parents reported her missing and began looking for her.

Phone records later showed that Walker tried calling her therapist at 3:27 p.m., and sent her therapist a text later that night. Her mother said those messages indicated Walker had run away from home.

Walker’s mother also told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. part of the USA TODAY Network. that Walker had a documented history of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. The case initially moved through law enforcement, but Walker’s family alleged that officers did not take the situation seriously.

  2. Wait I read somewhere it was 2021 not 2022?? Idk, the true crime people on TikTok mix stuff up all the time. If she left with a big backpack then she totally ran away, right? But also I saw depression/PTSD mentioned so… it’s just a lot.

  3. Good news but the details make me mad. If the cops didn’t take it serious back then, how did she just get found now? Also 1-800-THE-LOST?? that’s basically a hotline for everything missing but somehow nobody figured it out. I’m glad she’s safe but I still wanna know what happened, like who had her or if she was with a family friend or what.
