Delaware authorities identified 23-year-old John Wallace-Bey as the suspect in a deadly shooting at ChristianaCare Wilmington Hospital on June 16. One victim died and another remains hospitalized, as police say the incident appears targeted and isolated while

When police rushed into ChristianaCare Wilmington Hospital on June 16. the search that followed didn’t end with the gunshots—it only grew more urgent. By the time officers had located two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. one had died. and the other was left in critical but stable condition. authorities said.

On June 17, police identified the man accused of carrying out the attack: 23-year-old John Wallace-Bey, of New Castle, Delaware. The Wilmington Police Department said Wallace-Bey was taken into custody the night of June 16 in Philadelphia. after hours of searching. and is awaiting extradition to Delaware.

Wallace-Bey faces multiple charges, including murder, authorities said. Police listed charges of first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, two counts of possession of a firearm during a felony, and carrying a concealed deadly weapon.

Before the case reached Delaware, Wallace-Bey appeared in Philadelphia County municipal court for a June 17 preliminary arraignment and was denied bail, according to court documents obtained in coverage by the Delaware News Journal. An extradition hearing has been scheduled for June 29.

The shooting occurred on the afternoon of June 16 at ChristianaCare Wilmington Hospital. Officers were called at about 3:30 p.m. local time after receiving a report of a shooting inside the building. Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos said during a news conference. Police urged the public to avoid the downtown Wilmington area surrounding the hospital as they searched the 622,100-square-foot facility.

The chaotic scene led to an initial lockdown order that was lifted several hours later as police began clearing the scene.

“Police located two gunshot victims. One of those victims has tragically died from his injuries,” Campos said. In the police news release on June 17, authorities identified the two victims in the incident as 19-year-old men.

Police have not said where inside the hospital the shooting took place, and it has not been determined how a weapon was taken into the facility.

Both victims and Wallace-Bey were ChristianaCare employees at the time of the incident. a spokesperson from the health system told the Delaware News Journal on June 17. The timeline and aftermath have already put the investigation under strain, with uncertainty surrounding motive. Police have said the shooting appears to have been a targeted and isolated incident, though the reason remains under investigation.

The city where it happened is closely watched beyond the hospital’s walls. Wilmington is the largest city in Delaware. with a population of more than 73. 000. and is sometimes called the “corporate capital of America” because of the number of companies located in the state. Wilmington is about 30 miles south of Philadelphia.

The sequence of facts has also landed in a wider national debate over safety in healthcare settings. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has said workers in hospitals, nursing homes, and other healthcare settings face significant risks of workplace violence.

Citing data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. a 2025 article from the American College of Surgeons said healthcare workers are five times more likely than other occupations to experience workplace violence and that “in these types of events. 93% of assaults are committed against healthcare workers.”.

On June 17. Wilmington Mayor John Carney said he was “heartbroken for the victims and their loved ones. for the ChristianaCare team. and for the entire city of Wilmington.” He added. “Violence has no place in our community. ” and said it was “particularly distressing that such violence and tragedy unfolded at a facility with a primary function of providing lifesaving care.” Carney said healthcare workers and patients “should never fear for their safety.”.

As Wallace-Bey awaits extradition to Delaware, the case now turns on procedure and timing. The Wilmington Police Department says he remains in custody as authorities prepare for an extradition hearing on June 29. while the hospital and the city continue to reckon with an attack that left one person dead and another fighting through critical but stable injuries.

  1. Targeted and isolated… sure. Like how do they even know that already. Also they caught him in Philly so I guess Delaware cops were just late.

  2. He was denied bail in Philadelphia?? That part always confuses me, like how can he still be charged in Delaware if he’s sitting in another state’s system. Extradition on June 29 sounds like forever though.

  3. People keep saying “avoid downtown Wilmington” like that actually helps when it’s at a whole hospital. First lockdown, then lifted, then more searching… sounds like they didn’t know where it started. And “carrying a concealed deadly weapon” makes it sound like it was planned, not a random incident, so why didn’t they have better security in the first place?
