John Oliver roasts Trump and Watters over pool

For the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, the problems keep stacking up—and John Oliver delivered a full, no-holds-barred takedown of the people trying to explain them away.
On the Sunday. June 28 episode of Last Week Tonight. Oliver called the multimillion-dollar renovation “an absolute trainwreck. ” then listed what he said has been happening in and around the water. He described the project as plagued by “enormous pools of algae. ” large chunks of blue sealant peeling off. and “just this week” a trio of dead ducks discovered there.
Oliver also relayed a sharper description from a spokesperson for the Center for Biological Diversity, who characterized the effort as “wasting taxpayer money turning the reflecting pool into a giant duck death trap.”
Cost is where the story turns from gross to combustible. Oliver cited reports that the renovation costs had risen to $16 million after Trump awarded a no-bid contract to a company to install a new water-cleaning system for the pool. From there. he accused Trump of shifting into what he called “full blame deflection mode. ” claiming someone had slashed the pool’s liner—“probably a box-cutter or a knife of some kind.”.
Oliver then pushed back hard, quoting specialists to suggest the sabotage story doesn’t add up. He said experts have noted it would be “very challenging to cut that liner. ” and that repairs were far more likely “done ‘just too hastily.’” He also pointed to the suggestion that Trump “literally drove over the pool in his motorcade” during the work.
The late-night host’s emphasis landed on the mismatch between the evidence and the narrative his side kept promoting. He said Trump kept pushing a “sabotage conspiracy,” and supporters kept trying to sell it even as “the evidence was just laughably weak.”
That set the stage for Oliver’s pivot to Jesse Watters. who during the same broader conversation presented grainy footage of a young man and woman with their hands in the Reflecting Pool as possible proof of vandalism. Watters asked, “What are they doing with their hands in the pool?. Are they cutting the lining?. Are they peeling the paint?. We don’t know if they’re committing a crime. They’ll probably tell you they dropped their wedding ring.”.
Oliver responded with a personal jab, saying: “Maybe those people at the reflecting pool dropped their wedding ring after leaving their wife for a 25-year-old coworker; Jesse would know what that is like!”—a direct shot at Watters’ well-publicized affair with his former producer Emma DiGiovine.
Oliver wasn’t the only late-night voice pushing back on Trump’s explanation. On Jimmy Kimmel Live!. the president’s longtime late-night rival said Trump “promised he would drain the swamp. ” but instead “spent $14 million of our dollars building a new one.” Josh Johnson. appearing on The Daily Show. also dismissed the sabotage claims with a blunt line: “I’ve never seen someone have a line of logic so stupid they reverse-Inception themselves.”.
Behind the comedy, though, the dispute had already taken a legal turn. Trump has threatened to sue ABC over their reporting of the Lincoln Reflecting Memorial Pool. In a Truth Social post. he vowed to sue the network for what he called “false reporting. ” adding. “I like their money. which will be given to the U.S. Treasury!” He said this in reference to an earlier case in which ABC had to pay a multimillion-dollar settlement.
By the time Oliver was done, the message was clear: the pool’s condition, the cost overruns, and the sabotage claims were never going to stay in the realm of politeness—and the late-night circuit chose its moment to turn frustration into a full-throated takedown.
