Canada Day parade returns to North Vancouver—stationary

stationary Canada – After a six-year gap, North Vancouver’s Canada Day parade is back in Central Lonsdale—but not as a moving procession. Volunteers will host a “stationary” parade at Civic Plaza on July 1, packing the plaza with bands, dancers, a vintage car show, and family act

On July 1. Civic Plaza in Central Lonsdale won’t be just a place to walk through—it’ll be a place to gather. stare. and join in. North Vancouver’s Canada Day parade is returning after six years away. but the comeback comes with a twist: it will be a “stationary” parade. held in one location rather than moving down the street.

The event is being hosted by the volunteer-run Celebrate North Vancouver Society, with support from the City of North Vancouver. Organizers say they wanted a full-fledged parade this year. Instead. they’re hosting a community celebration at Civic Plaza. transforming the space into a Canadian cultural hub with bands. dancers. a vintage car show. face painting. family activities and more.

The shift isn’t happening in a vacuum. The society points to stretched police resources due to the FIFA World Cup as one of the reasons the traditional parade can’t roll through Lonsdale Avenue this time.

Jeremy Cato. chair of the Celebrate North Vancouver Society. says many of the volunteers involved in reviving the event previously took part in North Vancouver’s Canada Day parades with floats. vintage cars. and community groups. For them, the parade isn’t an abstract tradition. It’s something they’ve lived—by building, driving, and performing.

“A lot of our volunteers absolutely adore the parade,” Cato said. “They were in it, they had the floats, they drove their old cars, their old fire engines and they really wanted to keep the momentum going this year.”

Bringing it back hasn’t been quick or easy. The Celebrate North Vancouver Society started organizing the event in 2025, and Cato says the effort has been about more than staging a day of entertainment.

“We really wanted to make a statement about what regular folks can do when they work together,” Cato said.

Organizers are aiming for something wholesome and lively—live entertainment, community activities, and family attractions designed to draw in people passing by and keep them engaged in a “pretty tight space.”

“There’s lots to see and do there and it’s all in a pretty tight space, so it’s going to be pretty exciting,” Cato said.

The stationary parade is also meant to be a first step. Organizers are hoping this year’s event is the beginning of restoring a full Canada Day Parade along Lonsdale Avenue in 2027.

The parade and festivities will take place July 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Civic Plaza, 126 14th Street West, North Vancouver. For more information or to volunteer, organizers direct people to the event website.
