McGinn fires back as Scotland end 40-year World Cup drought

Scotland launched their World Cup campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Haiti in Foxborough. Following a balanced opening, John McGinn broke the deadlock for Scotland midway through the first half. McGinn had been described as a ‘pub player’ when things don’t go right for him during the week by Roy Keane, and he had the perfect response, scoring one of Scotland’s most famous ever goals. Haiti controlled significant portions of the second period but Steve Clarke’s team held strong to claim all three points.

Scotland’s triumph places the Tartan Army at the summit of their group before Friday’s encounter with Morocco and marks their first World Cup victory in almost 40 years. Here are all of the talking points from the USA: Following teammate Scott McTominay’s strike against the woodwork, McGinn was the player to end Scotland’s lengthy wait for a World Cup goal. Che Adams had escaped his marker to redirect the ball goalwards from short range. His attempt was stopped but the ball rebounded towards McGinn. The

Aston Villa midfielder unleashed a shot, with the ball finding the net courtesy of a deflection. After his strike in the Europa League final, McGinn now boasts another historic goal to his collection. He has also overtaken Kenny Dalglish (31 years and 103 days vs New Zealand in 1982) as Scotland’s oldest-ever World Cup goalscorer at 31 years and 238 days. It’s been an extended wait since Scotland’s previous World Cup goal – that arriving in a 1-1 stalemate with Norway back in 1998. However,

it’s been considerably longer for a victory. Scotland last enjoyed triumph in a World Cup fixture back in 1990 against Sweden in Genoa. The victory was hard-earned and just about merited. Clarke’s team certainly had to graft for the result, with Haiti proving far from easy opposition. However, Scotland delivered when it mattered most, finding the net and holding firm defensively at crucial moments. While some may have hoped for a more commanding display, given the lengthy wait for success, few will be grumbling. Scotland

realistically needed three points from this fixture to maintain hopes of progressing to the last 32 – and they’ve achieved precisely that. Tougher challenges undoubtedly lie ahead, with encounters against Brazil and Morocco looming. It’s clear that both opponents represent a substantial increase in difficulty. However, Clarke’s squad have now afforded themselves some margin for error. Securing a draw in each of their remaining two matches would significantly boost their qualification prospects, whether through automatic progression or as one of the leading third-placed sides. Naturally,

there will be some frustration within the Scotland camp that they only narrowly edged past Haiti. However, the underdogs deserve considerable praise for their showing. The gulf in quality between the sides was barely discernible. Haiti fashioned numerous opportunities – the most notable falling to Frantzdy Pierrot, whose header drifted just off target in the closing stages. As always, Scotland’s engine room provided their foundation against Haiti. McGinn found the breakthrough, while McTominay played a vital role in limiting Haiti’s attacking threat. It appears probable

that pairing will prove vital to securing any potential positive outcomes against Morocco or Brazil. The earlier group fixture was essentially determined in the middle of the pitch, with the African nation gaining superiority over their prestigious South American rivals in that area. Scotland undoubtedly must surpass both sides – with McGinn and McTominay’s assistance – if they harbour ambitions of achieving results against either opponent.
