Jimmy Kimmel didn’t wait long to make the reflecting pool part of the conversation.
During Tuesday’s monologue for “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” the comedian went after Donald Trump over the ongoing algae problem in the recently renovated reflecting pool in Washington, D.C., drawing a straight line between a major renovation effort and the pool’s sudden, stubborn greenness.
Kimmel said he couldn’t understand how someone who once made a living in hotels “can’t even keep a pool clean.” He pointed to Trump’s reported $14 million spending to update the reflecting pool on the National Mall. Kimmel said the goal was to resurface and repaint it. including Trump’s preference to paint it “American flag blue.” He then brought up the timing: the project was completed last week—and “now. not even a week later. it’s already completely green.”.
Then came the punchline. Kimmel said the pool is “Mexican flag green. ” adding that the White House calls the algae “residual algae.” He also mocked the cleanup efforts. saying workers were out there “dumping gallons of hydrogen peroxide in there. ” which he compared to the substance he said is also used to color Trump’s hair.
Kimmel made a further claim about why the algae took off. He said Trump’s decision to make the bottom of the pool a darker color caused the algae to grow because it made the water warmer—something algae “thrives in.”
From there, Kimmel landed on the broader joke about promises and consequences. “You know, he promised he would drain the swamp,” he said. “Instead. he spent 14 million of our dollars building a new one.” He added that Trump’s next move would be to “move St. Patrick’s Day to July and claim it’s green on purpose.”.
Kimmel also took aim at the media reaction. He said conservative coverage kept doubling down on support for the renovation. After playing a Fox News clip—where a reporter suggested “no other president” would clean up the reflecting pool—Kimmel joked that no one could do it. “Sorry. Abraham Lincoln wouldn’t have done that,” he said. “He couldn’t have done it. He didn’t have the courage to do it.”.
He then turned to another conservative segment, including one Real America’s Voice News reporter for suggesting something “nefarious” was going on over the algae. Kimmel’s response was quick and theatrical: “My god, the algae is working with Antifa,” he said. “You’ve cracked the case.”
