When James Harden’s Saturday night ended in a Texas arrest, it wasn’t just a headline for basketball fans — it was a sudden legal interruption for the Cleveland Cavaliers guard.
Harden. 36. was reportedly taken into custody for a misdemeanor charge of unlawful carrying of weapons after local law enforcement discovered a handgun in his car. He was arrested in Texas on Saturday, June 13. Within hours, he was released on bond, and a court date has been scheduled for Monday, June 22.
Harden has not publicly addressed the arrest. Us Weekly reached out to Harden’s rep for comment.
The timing lands hard against a backdrop that already carried pressure for the Cavaliers. The Ohio-based team were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals in May by the New York Knicks. Those same Knicks are currently facing off against the San Antonio Spurs in the 2026 NBA Finals, leading the series 3-1.
In a press conference held last month, Harden reflected on the Cavaliers’ loss, describing it as something that left him frustrated.
“I think that they made shots. some. obviously. open and some just tough shots. ” Harden said of the team’s loss. “I don’t think we made really any. … I think we accomplished a lot. still short of the goal but I think we accomplished getting to the conference finals. Now, there’s another level to get to [or] maybe two levels to get to.”.
He added, “I think a lot of that is just, you know, maybe our first time together and the first two series we had opportunities to handle the series much quicker than we did, and we didn’t take advantage of it.” Harden also admitted he found the Cavaliers’ loss “a little frustrating.”
He has previously described the Cavaliers as a talented group he expects to improve. Speaking about the road from their time together toward what comes next. he said. “I think being here two and a half. three months [while] that team’s been together for some years. which you still don’t get brownie points for. but I think we’re in a good space and we got some work to do. but we had a good season.”.
Harden said the team’s conference run was only the beginning. “I think it’s our first time going through whatever we were going to go through. and I think we accomplished a lot. you know. winning a Game 7 at home. winning a Game 7 on the road and getting to the conference finals. ” he added. “Now, we have to take another two steps starting this summer, but take another two steps and being even better. Now. you get a full season of understanding what we have as a group and uh setting ourselves up. like. positioning-wise for better.”.
His basketball résumé spans multiple stops: Harden previously played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Houston Rockets, the Brooklyn Nets, the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Los Angeles Clippers before joining the Cavaliers in 2025.
With a court date set for Monday, June 22, the next chapter won’t be on a scoreboard. It will be in a Texas courtroom — and for Harden, it comes with the kind of disruption athletes usually don’t get a chance to prepare for.
A separate legal matter also remains in the background: Harden was named in a sexual assault lawsuit against his nephew. Justice Armani Blackburn. A civil complaint filed in Harris County. Texas on Monday. June 23. obtained by Us Weekly. alleges that Blackburn raped Melissa Watley while she was unconscious at a New Year’s Eve….

Wait so they just found a handgun and that’s it? crazy
Misdemeanor but they were like “arrested” arrested. Sounds like another rich guy gets bond fast and moves on. Also how does it even get in the car??
So is this Texas where the Spurs are in the Finals? Because I swear I saw something about the Knicks too and now Harden… like how is basketball tied to guns lol. This whole thing feels timed with the playoffs though.
Unlawful carrying of weapons sounds like the headline is missing half the story. Did it belong to him or someone else? And why didn’t he address it publicly?? If he’s innocent just say something. Bond within hours also tells me it’s not as serious as they’re making it sound.
