Jalen Duren to meet Kings seeking sign-and-trade

Contract talks have stalled between Jalen Duren and the Pistons, and the restricted free agent is now preparing to meet with the Kings at the start of free agency Tuesday in hopes of exploring a sign-and-trade. After a strong regular season and third-team All-
The timing matters, and everyone in Detroit seems to know it.
Jalen Duren plans to meet with the Kings at the start of free agency on Tuesday. aiming to explore a sign-and-trade deal. according to NBA insider Chris Haynes. who reported this via Twitter. The move lands after months of tug-of-war energy around Duren’s restricted free agency—one that still has the Pistons and the player far apart.
The last signal from the Pistons wasn’t subtle. Talks between Duren and Detroit stalled on Friday, after the big man was “underwhelmed” by the team’s initial offer. By then, Sam Amick of The Athletic had already said Duren intended to explore sign-and-trade scenarios once free agency opened. Haynes’s update. however. kept the pressure on: he said the Pistons were still conveying that they were “solely” focused on working out a new deal with Duren.
But three days later, the posture appears to have shifted again—this time with Duren leaning harder into a road that could move him elsewhere. Haynes is hearing that Duren is serious about looking into sign-and-trade options that could place him on the kind of long-term, lucrative contract he wants.
Duren’s case for leverage starts with what he did before the playoffs. The 22-year-old is coming off a strong regular season: he made his first All-Star team and averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in 70 games while shooting 65% from the field. He also received votes for Defensive Player of the Year and earned third-team All-NBA honors.
That last detail matters for Detroit’s math. Third-team All-NBA honors made Duren eligible for a “Rose Rule” contract with the Pistons, letting them offer up to 30% of the salary cap instead of the usual 25%.
Then the postseason arrived, and the story got harder. Questions emerged in the playoffs as Duren’s averages slipped to 10.2 PPG and 8.5 RPG across two seven-game series against Orlando and Cleveland. Against the Cavs in particular. his effectiveness dipped. and Detroit turned multiple times to veteran big man Paul Reed in his place.
Around those performances, the money conversation sharpened. Reports in recent days have indicated that Duren is seeking either a maximum-salary contract or at least $40MM annually.
The Kings, for their part, aren’t in a simple position for a sign-and-trade involving a player on a significant salary. Still, they could make it work if they can get below the first tax apron. The team has already agreed to trade Devin Carter and his $5.2MM salary to Atlanta.
They’re also counting on the flexibility that comes from waiving and stretching contracts. The Kings could create over $22MM in savings by waiving and stretching DeMar DeRozan’s contract, which includes a $10MM partial guaranteed on a $25.7MM cap hit.
In a sign-and-trade scenario involving Duren, Haynes’s report suggests Kings center Domantas Sabonis would likely be involved. But even that isn’t the end of the story. It remains unclear how enthusiastic the Pistons would be about that kind of pairing.
And the central obstacle keeps resurfacing: without the cap room to simply offer Duren an offer sheet, any team trying to land him—starting with the Kings—would need to deliver a trade package that satisfies Detroit.
