Jacob Anderson Hesitated Before Louis Read Claudia’s Pages

In “Toronto” from The Vampire Lestat, Louis confronts Bruce with Claudia’s diary pages—an approach Jacob Anderson says initially “felt really gross” to perform, even as the scene ultimately drives home how devastating Louis and Claudia’s relationship can be.

Spoilers ahead for The Vampire Lestat Episode 3.

By the time Episode 3. “Toronto. ” lands. The Vampire Lestat has already made one thing clear: even when the story leans into a more chaotic retelling of Lestat de Lioncourt’s past. long-buried memories don’t stay buried for long. This week. the episode brings that pressure to the surface through Lestat’s complicated history with the late Nicki de Lenfent (Joseph Potter) and through his conflicting versions of his turning at the hands of the vampire Magnus (Damien Atkins).

But the episode’s most uncomfortable moment doesn’t come from Lestat’s past—it comes from Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) wrestling with how to deliver Claudia’s words.

“Toronto” presents two different depictions of the turning. with the second version framing Lestat as a terrified. helpless mortal forced to accept the Dark Gift. That portrayal is set alongside a voiceover from Louis reading one of Claudia’s old diary entries. spoken by Louis but pulled from Claudia’s private account.

The discomfort extends beyond the scene’s framing and what it represents in terms of cyclical trauma. Anderson also had to confront a practical question while filming: how do you play Louis reading Claudia’s pages—especially when the content is meant to be brutal?

Anderson said he and the production discussed “one particular piece of Louis’s story” at the start, and he couldn’t quite shake the way it felt in his hands.

“…the pages, Claudia’s pages, that coming from Louis’s mouth just felt really gross to me. It just felt really uncomfortable; I wasn’t quite sure. Like just understanding how to play that — do you play that this is gross?. Do you play that in earnest?. I couldn’t figure out what to do there, but the answer to that is text; it’s part of the show. The answer to that discomfort comes later on. It’s one of the most devastating pieces, I think, of certainly Louis and Claudia’s relationship and their story together.”.

The scene builds to that moment through a chain of violence that the episode doesn’t soften. After Louis receives a heads-up from the Talamasca about Bruce’s current whereabouts. he tracks the vampire to a house and then proceeds to systematically slaughter everyone inside. The escalation recalls Louis’s targeting of Armand’s (Assad Zaman) coven in Season 2.

When Bruce (Damon Daunno) finally shows up with his surprise fiancée, Baby Jenks (Ella Ballentine), Louis is already waiting. He attacks Bruce and breaks his spine so that Bruce can only sit and listen as Louis reads pages from Claudia’s diary describing Bruce’s assault in brutal detail.

Louis doesn’t stop at the confrontation. He pursues revenge on Claudia’s behalf by setting her diary pages on fire, leaving them to burn on top of Bruce’s head as Bruce is engulfed.

Yet the episode refuses to let revenge land as true relief. Even after the act, the catharsis is ultimately hollow when Claudia’s death enters the emotional math.

What’s next, though, is its own mystery—because “Toronto” also leaves viewers watching Louis circle around someone new. Regina (Delainey Hayles) appears as Louis lurks around her. and she seems to resemble the young vampire Lestat turned so long ago. Fans will have to wait for the coming weeks to find out who Regina is and why the resemblance matters.
