Jack Campbell stays a Lion with four-year extension

Detroit opted not to exercise Jack Campbell’s contract option for 2027, then moved quickly to secure him long term with a four-year, $81 million extension. Campbell said he didn’t chase top billing—he wanted to remain in the Detroit “core” with the Lions’ lead

For linebacker Jack Campbell, it wasn’t the payday that mattered most—it was staying in Detroit.

The Lions did not exercise their option on Campbell’s contract for the 2027 season. But the team made it clear the decision wasn’t about cooling their interest in him. Last week, the situation moved from uncertainty to commitment when Campbell signed a four-year, $81 million extension with Detroit.

Campbell said the extension matched what he wanted when he spoke via Eric Woodyard of ESPN.com. “Let’s be realistic here, like, I already have more than enough. So. for me. it was more about the principle of I just want to be in the elite category. because I feel like I’m an elite linebacker and that’s the way [Lions GM] Brad [Holmes] saw it and that’s the way everyone upstairs saw it . . .

I feel like, for me, I don’t need to be the highest paid,” Campbell said. He added: “Even though the guys around the league would probably appreciate that because it bumps up everything. So, I’m sorry to them. But I just feel like for me, I knew what I wanted in this. I want to help the team in any way possible. Just to continue to keep the core together so. I mean. at the

end of the day. I feel like it was fair for the team and I’m more than happy with everything that they blessed me with.”.

The timing matters, because Campbell’s desire to remain a Lion for the long term was already clear. In describing his motivation, the extension was tied directly to his belief that he wanted to be part of the team “no matter what.”

Campbell will not be the highest-paid linebacker in the league. There is still a small gap between him and San Francisco 49ers star Fred Warner. whose contract averages $21 million per year. Warner’s figure sits just ahead of where Campbell ranks in the league’s salary pecking order. but the difference isn’t described as large—meaning the deal reads as a win without needing to chase the absolute top number.

Detroit keeps its linebacker core in place while Campbell gets the long-term answer he wanted. The Lions’ brief detour away from the 2027 option doesn’t change what comes next: a clearer runway together. and a player insisting the real goal was staying with the group he feels is building toward something bigger.

  1. I don’t get why they didn’t exercise the 2027 option first if they knew they wanted him long term. Sounds like games were being played, like always.

  2. Fred Warner is still making like 21 mil so Campbell not highest paid is kinda surprising to me. But then again Detroit’s always acting like money doesn’t matter until it does. Maybe he just liked the weather or whatever lol.

  3. They said it wasn’t about cooling interest but “didn’t exercise” the option first… okay sure. Also 81 million sounds like a lot but the article makes it sound “fair” like that’s supposed to calm people down. I swear these teams negotiate like they’re in a soap opera. Detroit better keep the defense together or this is gonna look silly.
