iOS 27 brings smarter Wallet splitting and new Maps tools

Apple used the iOS 27 cycle to upgrade the everyday stuff: Apple Wallet’s receipt scanning that auto-splits bills with Apple Cash, new Flyover visuals and Local Lists inside Apple Maps, and more flexible location-sharing controls in Find My. Music, Podcasts, i
The most revealing part of Apple’s WWDC iOS 27 news wasn’t the flashiest AI headlines—it was the quiet push to make daily life smoother, faster, and a little more personal.
This iOS 27 update lands across apps people use constantly. from splitting restaurant bills in Apple Wallet to sharing locations with tighter control in Find My. Apple also refreshed how Maps looks and helps you discover local spots. while changes to Apple Music. Apple Podcasts. iCloud Shared Albums. and Fitness+ round out the release.
In Apple Maps, Flyover has been refreshed with more detailed visuals and smoother navigation. Apple also introduced “Local Lists. ” a new way to discover and save recommendations for restaurants. attractions. and other spots within Maps by seeing what’s trending—an effort that could keep users inside Apple’s ecosystem for local exploration.
Find My is getting more flexible, too. Beginning this fall. users will be able to share their location for a custom amount of time—whether that’s a few minutes. several hours. multiple days. or until a specific date and time. There’s also a new option to temporarily pause location sharing with individual contacts until the end of the day. designed for real moments like keeping a surprise birthday party under wraps.
The sharpest day-to-day upgrade may come in Apple Wallet. With a new feature powered by Apple Intelligence. users can scan receipts using their iPhone camera and automatically split bills with friends using Apple Cash. Apple says the feature can identify individual items on a receipt. calculate each person’s share of taxes and tips. and facilitate repayment directly through Messages or Wallet.
Wallet is also expanding beyond payments. Apple is adding support for digitizing physical membership and loyalty cards. letting users scan a barcode or a digital card with their iPhone camera to save it into Wallet. Support is extending to Apple Watch, so passes can be pinned to the Apple Watch Smart Stack for faster retrieval.
For travelers, Apple is revamping the hotel key experience inside Wallet. Guests staying at participating hotels and resorts will be able to unlock rooms and access amenities with an iPhone or Apple Watch. and also view trip details. activity schedules. service information. and real-time updates directly within Wallet.
Apple Pay is moving toward a more navigable checkout flow online and in apps. Users will be able to swipe between payment cards more easily while viewing information such as rewards balances. debit account balances. and available pay-later options. Later this year. Apple says users will be able to add funds directly to eligible debit cards through Wallet or during Apple Pay checkout.
On the merchant side, Apple is expanding “Tap to Pay” on iPhone with a new feature called “Tap to Share,” allowing customers to connect directly with participating merchants using a simple tap to securely share information such as loyalty accounts, shipping addresses, and contact details.
Apple Music gets language-focused upgrades for lyrics. “Lyrics Translation” is expanding to support seven additional language pairings. including English translations for songs in French. German. Italian. Korean. Spanish. and Japanese. Apple is also adding “Lyrics Pronunciation. ” which displays phonetically translated lyrics across five new language pairings to help users sing along to songs in languages they may not speak.
Elsewhere in music. the “AutoMix” feature—meant to create smoother transitions between songs—is being enhanced with more immersive mixes and expanding beyond iPhone to Apple TV and HomePod. Apple Music subscribers are also getting access to Hi-Res Lossless Audio on Apple TV 4K. enabling studio-quality audio through compatible sound systems via tvOS.
Podcast listeners aren’t being left out. A new “search within show” feature lets users search directly through episodes of a specific podcast across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro, and the web. Apple is also bringing video podcasts to both Mac and Apple TV.
In iCloud Shared Albums. Apple says it’s introducing full-resolution photo sharing. support for additional file types. emoji reactions. improved activity feeds. and the ability to view activity on a per-album basis. The update also adds new temporary albums designed for short-term projects and events so groups can collaborate without permanently taking up iCloud storage. Apple adds that people without Apple devices will be able to contribute photos through the web.
Fitness+ is getting a new program called “Strong Through Menopause. ” a three-week set of guided Yoga and Strength workouts designed to help people navigating perimenopause and menopause build strength. improve mobility and balance. and manage stress. Apple is also adding a new “Time to Walk” episode featuring actor Busy Philipps. who shares personal stories about her experiences with perimenopause.
All of these features are available for developers to test right now through the Apple Developer Program, with a public beta arriving next month.
In a single sweep. iOS 27 turns “small frictions” into features: better discovery in Maps. tighter control in Find My. and far less manual math in Wallet. It’s an update aimed at the moments that normally interrupt plans—splitting a bill. coordinating locations. boarding a trip—and smoothing them out before they become problems.

So it can split a bill for you now… when did paying for food become homework?
I don’t get it, “Local Lists” sounds like Yelp but inside Maps? Also Find My pause till end of day… like people aren’t gonna forget anyway. Apple’s just trying to keep everyone from leaving their apps.
Wait—receipt scanning means it knows what you bought and then it splits the taxes automatically right? That seems kinda sketchy to me, like now my phone is keeping track of everything I ever ordered. Maybe it’s fine but I can’t be the only one thinking about privacy.
If iOS 27 can “pause location sharing” until the end of the day, wouldn’t that just be the same as turning it off? And “Flyover” smoother navigation?? Every update is just prettier roads lol. Also I saw somewhere it does it without Apple Cash so that’s kinda what I assumed… not sure. Either way I’ll update when they fix the battery thing.
