Ingraham calls vandalism Democrats’ fault over Reflecting Pool

On Tuesday, Fox News host Laura Ingraham posted a blunt question on X about who might stop damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool — and she tied the problem to Democrats.

“Will any Democrat urge people not to vandalize the Reflecting Pool?” Ingraham wrote.

Her post landed with immediate fury online. particularly because Trump has publicly blamed vandals for the pool’s troubles. and has leaned on the idea that the damage points back to Democratic leadership. The argument has quickly collided with a more pointed counter-demand from critics: show the footage.

The Reflecting Pool has been at the center of Trump’s push to refurbish major landmarks ahead of America’s 250th anniversary celebration this summer. Trump launched $14 million in renovations, only for the water to become infested by algae and turn green, with new paint reportedly chipping off.

Trump has said the pool’s condition traces to his Democratic predecessors. He also accused ABC News of failing to report what past administrations spent to maintain the pool, and on Monday threatened to sue ABC over that coverage tied to his renovation work.

Ingraham appeared to echo Trump’s claims about alleged vandalism. Trump has blamed peeling paint on supposed vandals, baselessly saying they “went in there with a knife,” and Ingraham’s post asked Democrats to push back against that alleged behavior.

Not everyone who replied was willing to take the vandalism claim at face value. Celebrity chef José Andrés. who founded the World Central Kitchen charity. wrote Tuesday on X: “Come on Laura. no one has vandalize the reflecting pool….no one!” He wasn’t alone in demanding receipts. Another person wrote: “Provide proof of someone vandalizing the reflecting pool.”.

One of the sharpest replies took aim at the simple premise behind Ingraham’s question: if vandalism were happening, viewers should be able to see it.

“If someone else vandalized it then there would be footage of it running 24/7 on Fox,” wrote one user. Another person echoed that the pool is already under constant scrutiny. writing: “We didn’t want Trump to do it in the first place. And as you know, Ms. Ingraham, the pool is under 24-7 surveillance. It hasn’t been vandalized.”.

The online pushback also broadened beyond the question of proof and toward the politics of blame itself. One user wrote, “We’ve been trying to get Trump to stop but he just keeps messing with it and making it worse,” adding frustration that has swelled alongside the renovation’s setbacks.

Others attacked the credibility of the claim that vandals are the driver of the problem. Several posts focused on the lack of evidence and suggested it would be impossible for such damage to occur without visible documentation given the surveillance environment.

Behind the scenes, the practical response to the algae has also become part of the argument. The no-bid $1.7 million cleaning contract was reportedly awarded to Green Water Solutions, a company owned by Trump donor J.J. Cafaro. That company has been trying to fight algae using a “nanobubble” filtration system, which critics say has not produced results.

The tension is now playing out on two tracks at once: the political dispute over who is responsible for the Reflecting Pool’s condition, and the public demand for evidence that vandalism is actually occurring — particularly when Trump’s renovations have already run into highly visible failures.

One social media user summed up the skepticism bluntly. calling out the mismatch between the alleged vandalism narrative and the lack of proof. “Do you have any actual evidence that anyone vandalized the pool?. There are 24/7 CCTV cameras everywhere. Surely you have some photographic footage?” wrote Deborah, whose post used the name “Deborah, My Friends Call Me Slayer.”.

Even as the argument intensifies, the imagery remains hard to ignore: a National Park Service member seen last week trying to remove algae from the pool — a vivid reminder of the physical problem at the heart of the controversy.
