Hurts calls Mannion’s offense “exciting” for Eagles

Jalen Hurts says working under Sean Mannion is “exciting,” praising a new leadership style and a focus on fundamentals, timing and scheme. Mannion joins the Eagles after a stint with the Green Bay Packers as quarterback coach and offensive assistant.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts didn’t talk like someone watching another coordinator arrive from the outside—he talked like someone ready to learn a new rhythm.

In comments obtained by The Athletic’s Zach Berman on May 21. Hurts called the offense being installed under Sean Mannion “exciting.” He said. “It’s a different leader. different coordinator. different philosophical approach. It’s exciting. It’s exciting to learn a new brand of football and just grow.”.

Mannion is joining the Eagles following his most recent tenure with the Green Bay Packers, where he served as quarterback coach and offensive assistant. As a former quarterback, he was expected to build a strong working relationship with Hurts.

That expectation is right there in Hurts’ praise of what changes when a new voice takes over—especially when the message starts with details. He framed it as an opportunity to expand, to learn, and to grow alongside a different approach.

What Hurts was getting from Mannion, too, came with its own kind of pressure: the kind that shows up in the questions a quarterback asks in meetings, and the work that happens after practice.

In the same set of comments from May 21 that Hurts referenced. Mannion heaped praise on Hurts. saying. “Jalen’s been awesome. I really think he can do anything we ask of him. He’s accurate. He’s a great athlete. He really attacks the fundamentals. That’s what’s been really fun to watch these last two weeks of phase two. He’s always wanting more things to work on, wanting more things regarding fundamentals, timing, understanding the scheme.”.

Mannion added, “He’s hungry for more. Those are the guys that are really fun to work with. In terms of skillset though. he has great arm strength. great accuracy. obviously a tremendous athlete and he really attacks the game. He has a great process in the meetings. He always asks really, really thought provoking questions. He’s detailed and attacks his fundamentals. He’s always a guy who stays after practice and is working on things. Those are the guys you love to work with.”.

The numbers behind the praise are already there for Hurts. In the 2020-25 season, he threw for 3,224 yards and 25 touchdowns with only six interceptions on 64.8% completion. He also contributed as a runner, rushing for eight carries and eight touchdowns.

With Mannion in place, Hurts is being sold a message that doesn’t depend on noise—it depends on preparation. And Hurts, in his own words, seems willing to match that pace as the Eagles move into what he described as a new “brand of football.”

  1. Sean Mannion sounds like he’s just telling Hurts to do the basics and “timing.” Like… okay. But the Eagles still gotta block, right? Defense wins games.

  2. Isn’t Mannion the Packers guy who like, ruined some QB or something? I swear I read he was there and then they moved on. Hurts praising him feels like PR, not results.

  3. I don’t get why people are acting like this is a big deal. Hurts already throws accurate and runs, the offense was already set. “Different philosophical approach” sounds like the same stuff with a new clipboard. Also the Athletic quotes always cut off at the end, so who knows what else he actually said. If they start scoring more then great, but I’m not buying “exciting” as anything real.
