Hurricanes’ Bussi keeps answering, Brind’Amour watches calmly

Brandon Bussi’s – Brandon Bussi once again stole the spotlight as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, tightening their grip on the championship. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour says Bussi’s breakout has never truly surprised him—

Thursday night carried the kind of momentum playoff teams dream about—and Brandon Bussi has been the one forcing it.

The Carolina Hurricanes won Game 5 over the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final. and Bussi’s latest outing in goal helped push the series into the next gear. The rookie has become the story across hockey. a name that keeps appearing whenever people try to explain how Carolina is so close to the ultimate prize.

But Rod Brind’Amour’s reaction has been strikingly steady.

“All year, he’s been like that. Just look at every start he’s had. We came into the playoffs thinking we would use both guys. We didn’t need to, because (Frederik Andersen) was going so well. Now, we needed him, and he’s stepped in and has played great,” Brind’Amour said in an interview with TVA Sports.

It’s a contrast that matters as the series tightens: outside the Hurricanes’ walls, Bussi’s run has been treated like a shock. Inside them, their head coach frames it as something he expected to arrive when called on.

Carolina did have a clear plan early. The team had clinched the top spot in the Eastern Conference with a strong regular season from Bussi. Then, as Brind’Amour alluded to, Frederik Andersen took over the net and stayed locked in through the playoffs.

Bussi still got his opening, though, and it came after a less-than-ideal showing from Andersen in Game 3. Bussi replaced him and has held the net ever since. Since then, Carolina has done its part to back him—outscoring the Golden Knights 10-6 following the rookie’s step into the crease.

In Game 5, Bussi’s performance matched the moment. He stopped 23 shots while making clutch saves during a wave of pressure in the third period, an especially important stretch given what was at stake in a championship series.

Now the question is whether Carolina leans into the confidence of the hot hand or pivots back to experience. Whether Bussi gets the nod in Game 6 remains uncertain. even if it’s considered likely the Hurricanes will stick with what’s working. The other option is Andersen. and the coaching calculus is easy to understand when you consider the potential timing: Carolina can win the Stanley Cup on Sunday night in Las Vegas with a victory in Game 6.

One way or another. the series has reached a point where decisions about goaltending aren’t just about saves—they’re about trust. timing. and who feels most ready when the final buzzer is within reach. Brind’Amour believes Carolina didn’t need to be surprised by Bussi all along. The Hurricanes now get to find out whether that belief holds through the final game that could end it.

  1. So they said he’s a rookie but also “clinched the top spot”?? That doesn’t even sound right, like did he really do all that by himself. Either way I guess the goalie decides everything.

  2. I don’t get why everyone acts shocked. Goalies get hot, that’s it. Also Andersen had one bad game and then Bussi just takes over forever? feels like fans already had their pitchfork ready.

  3. Brind’Amour “watches calmly” meanwhile I’m stressed just reading it. Hockey coaches always say “we planned for it” but come on, they probably panicked after Game 3. And ESPN keeps saying Vegas this and that like it’s some whole conspiracy, not just a goalie playing better that night.
