Hunter Davenport’s secret ignites Dean’s brawl in Season 2

Prime Video’s Off Campus pivoted from Elle Kennedy’s books by making Hunter Davenport (Charlie Evans) the antagonist in Allie and Dean’s romance. His identity is revealed in the Season 1 finale, and Dean ends the season in a brawl—setting up a new, book-diverg

For a romance that had been quietly heating up, Off Campus ended Season 1 with a sudden, violent snap. Right as Allie—Mika Abdalla—stays faithful to a deal she made with Dean (Stephen Kalyn). Hunter Davenport walks into Malone’s. That timing is everything: by the time the credits roll, Dean is in a brawl with Hunter.

The history between them isn’t just emotional—it’s loaded. In the season, Hunter’s identity is concealed when Allie meets him at a bar with Joanna Maxwell (Lauren Patten). Hunter, played by Charlie Evans, is using a fake ID that identifies him as “Carter St. James.” He and Allie share a steamy kiss. then things escalate when they hook up after Allie makes that deal with Dean to sleep with other people to avoid getting too close.

But Dean isn’t just dealing with jealousy and temptation. John Logan (Antonio Cipriano) has been trying to recruit Hunter—without Dean knowing Hunter is really Davenport—following Garrett’s suspension. Dean’s feelings complicate the picture even more when Hunter is said to have “outskated” him during tryouts.

Then there’s the part that makes the conflict personal: Hunter’s connection to Dean’s family. Hunter has gone to school with Dean’s sister, Summer, and they share a seemingly contentious history. By the time Hunter’s real name is finally revealed in the Season 1 finale. that baggage feels like it was always waiting to explode.

Season 1’s end doesn’t just change the tone. It changes the shape of Allie and Dean’s story—something the show is already leaning into as it moves toward Season 2. Hunter’s role in their arc is notably different from Elle Kennedy’s books. where Dean’s relationship with Hunter is more mentor-like on and off the ice.

That divergence expands beyond romance logistics. Hunter even gets his own standalone book titled The Play. which follows the steamy romance between Hunter and a new character. Demi Davis. Off Campus. however. is shifting course by moving up Allie and Dean’s story—described as the third book in the series—to Season 2. while also adding a cliffhanger to Hannah and Garrett’s happy ending.

“There always felt like there had to be something at the end of that Season 1 that would make you really want to come back and see Season 2,” co-showrunner Gina Fattore said.

So what happens next?. In Kennedy’s books, the material doesn’t map cleanly onto the screen version of Hunter’s conflict with Dean. What feels certain is that Dean is going to have to work through resentment toward Hunter—especially if Hunter is joining the team and the stakes with Allie get more serious. The Summer tie. meanwhile. fits the source material in a different way: in The Play. Summer is Hunter’s friend and former college roommate. and Hunter had previously crushed on her.

The Hunter factor adds another layer of bumps for Allie and Dean’s romance, which is already set up to carry tribulations—including grief connected to a character fans have already met by Season 1. Whether the adaptation keeps those key plot points intact remains to be seen.

For now, the takeaway is clear: the romance didn’t just stall—it collided. Dean’s brawl with Hunter as Season 1 ends makes it feel like Season 2 won’t simply continue Allie and Dean’s love story. It will force them to fight for it, with Hunter Davenport at the center of the storm.
