Humanity fights atomic breath with fire in trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero

After a tense countdown on the official Godzilla YouTube channel on Tuesday morning, TOHO and distributor GKIDS have unleashed a new trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero, director Takashi Yamazaki’s sequel to his Academy Award-winning 2023 smash, Godzilla Minus One. As you can see in the video below, the Big Scaly One has returned once more to stomp all over mankind’s sense of natural order, and, frankly, he’s never looked better. Described in the release as “an experience that demands the big screen,” Zero is the first Japanese production filmed in IMAX, promising even more atomic oomph to the franchise’s sense of scale, while “keeping its post-WWII Japan narrative at human eye level.” When the trailer’s aspect ratio expands into the eye-bugging box frame of IMAX and Godzilla lets fly its mighty roar, you know Zero isn’t playing around.

According to the official release from TOHO/GKIDS, Zero reunites Ol’ Atomic Breath with the Shikishima family—war hero Kōichi (Ryunosuke Kamiki), Noriko (Minami Hamabe), and their adopted child Akiko (Sae Nagatani)—two years after the nuclear-addled carnage of One. Per the logline for the film, “humanity [has] managed to cling to a hard-won peace,” but as peace is rarely a factor in kaiju situations such as these, “a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here.” The trailer’s final shot, which we won’t spoil, suggests whatever this “new threat” that befalls Japan is, it won’t be simply beyond humanity’s reckoning but perhaps even beyond Godzilla itself. Ain’t that always the way?

Godzilla Minus Zero will premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 26, followed by the Japanese premiere on November 6. The film releases in North America on November 6.
