A woman who died during the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks has been identified nearly 25 years later using forensic investigative genetic genealogy.
Nearly 25 years after the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history, Americans are preparing to mark another Sept. 11 anniversary and remember the 2,977 people killed when four hijacked planes struck New York, Washington and Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001.
The attacks claimed the lives of people from 90 countries, killed 441 first responders and reshaped the United States for generations. As communities across the nation honor the victims this week, many continue to ask about the scale of the tragedy, including how many people died and how many were injured.
How many people died in the 9/11 attacks?
The Sept. 11 attacks killed 2,977 people, including passengers and crew members aboard the four hijacked planes, according to the 9/11 Memorial Museum.
Flight breakdown:
- American Airlines Flight 11: 11 crew members, 76 passengers and five hijackers
- United Airlines Flight 175: 9 crew members, 51 passengers and five hijackers
- American Airlines Flight 77: 6 crew members, 53 passengers and five hijackers
- United Airlines Flight 93: 7 crew members, 33 passengers and four hijackers
(The 2,977 figure from the 9/11 Memorial Museum does not include the hijackers.)
How many people were injured in the 9/11 attacks?
The exact number of people injured in the Sept. 11 attacks is unclear, but thousands survived with physical and emotional injuries.
More than 130,000 responders and survivors connected to the World Trade Center and related sites are now enrolled in the federally funded World Trade Center Health Program, which monitors and treats illnesses linked to exposure during and after the attacks.
The official death toll includes the 2,977 people killed on Sept. 11, 2001. It does not include the thousands of first responders, recovery workers and survivors who later died of illnesses tied to their exposure at Ground Zero and other 9/11-related sites.
