Houston storm alert Monday as flood watch lasts

Houston Flood – A FOX 26 Storm Alert is issued for Monday as Gulf moisture ramps up across Greater Houston. A Flood Advisory for parts of Harris and Montgomery County runs until 9:30 p.m. Sunday, while a Flood Watch is expected through Wednesday morning with 2–5 inches of rai

Houston is heading into a wetter stretch right on schedule—one that could turn streets into slow-moving rivers.

A FOX 26 Storm Alert has been issued for Monday as activity in the Gulf brings more moisture to Greater Houston. The warning comes after a Flood Advisory was in effect for parts of Harris and Montgomery County until 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

By 7:30 p.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service reported 1–2 inches of rain had already fallen in the area. Another 1–2 inches is expected, and that amount could cause some minor flooding.

After Monday arrives, the threat grows. Storms and heavy downpours are expected to become more widespread as tropical moisture collides with a stalling front. Periods of moderate to heavy rain are expected through Wednesday, with rainfall amounts of 2–5 inches through midweek. Isolated totals of 6–8 inches are still possible.

The forecast also keeps an eye on how quickly water can show up—especially where storms linger. Some storms could produce heavy rain in a short amount of time, raising the risk for quick street flooding where showers remain or repeatedly move over the same areas.

Officials are urging residents to be ready to act fast. Make sure you are ready to get inside a building quickly if you start to see lightning or hear thunder.

A “wetter pattern” is setting up early next week. A weak tropical low and front dropping in from the north are expected to keep moisture flowing, fueling more widespread downpours. Some areas could see a total of 2–4 inches through the middle of the week, with locally higher amounts possible.

Sunday brought a clear street-flooding risk picture for southeast Texas, with a 2/4 risk noted for that concern. That threat continues through Tuesday.

The Gulf is still being watched closely. A weak area of low pressure is meandering along the coast of eastern Mexico, bringing disorganized showers and storms. The system could re-emerge in the Gulf on Tuesday or Wednesday. but overall conditions for any further development are still low at this time.

Across the coast, the story is the same: deep Gulf moisture is expected to increase rainfall along the Texas coastline and in Southeast Texas. Heavy downpours are expected locally Sunday through at least Tuesday.

In Houston, the timing matters. Rain already fell by Sunday evening, more is expected Sunday night, and then the pattern steadies into a longer stretch of storms through Wednesday morning—leaving less room for a “wait and see” attitude when the sky turns dark and thunder starts.
