House of the Dragon’s Season 3 Premiere Turns Fateful

Spoiler-heavy events from House of the Dragon’s Season 3 premiere land with impact: Rhaenyra pushes toward an all-out invasion, Jacaerys locks her in while he and Baela take control, and the Battle of the Gullet explodes into tragedy that kills Jacaerys instan
The moment the smoke clears in House of the Dragon’s Season 3 premiere, the war is no longer something looming on the horizon—it’s already devouring everyone in its path.
After a Season 2 finale that ended with Rhaenyra Targaryen conspiring with Alicent to take King’s Landing once and for all. the new episode picks up right where it left off. and it does so “in spectacular fashion.” For Rhaenyra. grief has sharpened into obsession. Still grieving the death of her son, Lucerys (Elliot Grihault), she has grown determined to kill Aegon—whatever it costs.
That determination is backed by Daemon’s (Matt Smith) newfound army. the Sea Snake’s naval fleet under Corlys (Steve Toussaint). and a newly recruited squadron of bastards with Targaryen dragon blood. It’s a recipe built for an all-out war to reclaim the Iron Throne. even as Rhaenyra and her childhood friend’s relationship shows a shift in trust. She believes Alicent’s desire to sacrifice Aegon for the good of the kingdom is genuine.
Her eldest heir, Jacaerys (Harry Collett), doesn’t buy it. He firmly believes Alicent is leading his mother into a trap. But Rhaenyra won’t heed the counsel of her firstborn child, choosing again to do whatever it takes to kill both of her half-brothers.
Across Westeros, other pieces of the board start moving in a rush before King’s Landing can be fully surrounded. Rhaena Targaryen (Phoebe Campbell). desperate for a dragon of her own. is trying to tame the wild beast known as Sheepstealer in the Vale. Daemon. meanwhile. is leading a campaign against the affluent Lannisters before he makes contact with House Stark. forming an alliance that proves the Lannister and Stark rivalry predates the events of Game of Thrones by many decades.
Then there’s the newly recruited band of bastard dragonriders Rhaenyra has collected—growing impatient waiting for their queen to join them in their planned ambush of Aemond. Their impatience gets tangled with something stranger: a run-in with a mysterious antlered creature.
Corlys, preparing for battle, finds that the fight arrives sooner than he expects.
In King’s Landing, the atmosphere flips from controlled to collapsing.
The Greens are practically falling apart at the seams. The current king of Westeros is fleeing King’s Landing with Lord Larys Strong (Matthew Needham). When they’re stopped by Rhaenyra’s footsoldiers. Larys surrenders himself and Aegon into captivity. seemingly implying they will surrender to Rhaenyra just as the tide turns.
Back within the city’s walls. Aemond has effectively named himself king in the absence of his brother. Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney). He moves like someone trying to hold power together by force of will—while Alicent looks at him with fear. Aemond is also shaken by how quickly the Blacks are making progress. The more the Blacks advance. the more likely it becomes that he will have to confront Daemon. the uncle he once revered—and even a dragon as large as his undefeated Vhagar could be genuinely challenged.
Still, Alicent encourages her son to face Daemon in battle. The premiere gives that pressure a brutal physical punctuation: Aemond responds by kissing his own mother on the lips, a moment that leans into the show’s harsh reminder that Targaryens never stop finding ways to wound each other.
The episode also delivers one of its most famous hazards in Thrones history: the Battle of the Gullet.
At first, there’s a potential lifeline for the Greens through their new alliance with the Triarchy. But Sharako Lohar (Abigail Thorn) has a personal score to settle with her enemy, the Sea Snake. She’s willing to abandon her position as the flagship to pursue her mission of revenge—an instinct that feeds into the Battle of the Gullet. perhaps the greatest naval war ever showcased in the Game of Thrones universe.
Rhaenyra prepares to take her dragon into battle, but a worried Jacaerys makes a decisive, desperate move. He locks his mother in her chambers while he and Baela (Bethany Antonia) leave to turn the tide themselves with their own dragons.
On the front lines. the Sea Snake’s forces clash with Lohar’s. and Corlys understands the shape of the risk: his old enemy will do anything to catch up. Lohar is led through a narrow strait, forcing her to sacrifice her Lannister allies. The battle culminates in a final. chaotic clash between seafarers that ends with Corlys being thrown overboard. his fate left unknown.
Lohar meets her end at the hand of Corlys’ recently reclaimed son, Alyn of Hull (Abubakar Salim).
With the Triarchy’s naval commander defeated, victory should be secure. The premiere doesn’t give the audience that comfort for long.
A wildcard surges into the fight when Rhaena brings a semi-tamed Sheepstealer into the battle. At first, the dragon’s presence helps—but the shift is quick. The wild dragon starts attacking friendlies. Jacaerys and Baela try to stop it. but once Jacaerys realizes his kin is riding the monster. he has to maneuver to get out of the way. In doing so, Jacaerys sends Vermax to the depths.
The last thing the episode needs is more delay, and it delivers instantly. A nearby ship fires a slew of arrows that kills Jacaerys in an instant. It’s a death that takes yet another of Rhaenyra’s children and turns the premiere into a fast. brutal pivot—one that sets the stage for an explosive penultimate season.
House of the Dragon Season 3’s premiere is streaming on HBO Max now.
Clare Kilner and Geeta Patel directed the episode, with writers including Gabe Fonseca. The season’s broader web traces back through the showrunner credit tied to George R.R. Martin, and the series itself began airing on August 21, 2022, on HBO.
The episode arrives with a hard-earned reputation: The Battle of the Gullet is impressive and lives up to the hype. Olivia Cooke’s performance as a conflicted mother lands with force. Jacaerys’ death is set up to carry terrible consequences—while. for now. main players like Rhaenyra and Daemon don’t have much to do (yet).

Wait so Jacaerys dies like immediately? 😬
I didn’t even finish reading this but it sounds like Rhaenyra is just going full rage mode. Killing Aegon “whatever it costs” like okay sure. Also Battle of the Gullet?? I thought that already happened? Confusing.
so Jacaerys “locks her in” and then somehow he’s dead? I feel like the article is mixing scenes up. Like is this when they take over King’s Landing or is that later? Either way I hate that Lucerys is being referenced again like this is still Season 2. Smh.
Every time they say “bastards with dragon blood” I roll my eyes because doesn’t that mean half the cast has dragon blood now? And Daemon having a “newfound army” like where did he get all that suddenly. The smoke clears and it’s already devouring everyone… sounds like the writers just spedrun the tragedy. I’m still mad about Lucerys so yeah this one’s gonna hurt.
