House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 Airs Tonight

The wait is over for fans of HBO’s “House of the Dragon.” Season 3, Episode 2 arrives Sunday, June 28, 2026 at 9pm ET / 6pm PT on HBO and HBO Max, continuing a season already drawing massive attention after last week’s premiere.

For the third season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel, the clock is finally ready to turn again.

“House of the Dragon” Season 3, Episode 2 lands on HBO Max and HBO on Sunday, June 28, 2026 at 9pm ET / 6pm PT, with the episode running for a total of 68 minutes.

The series started Season 3 last Sunday with a premiere that brought 21.5 million viewers—an enormous opening. even if it was nearly 2 million short of the 23.4 million viewers who watched the Season 2 premiere. The audience numbers only underline what fans already know: in Westeros. every conspiracy over steel and dragon flame has consequences. and this season is moving fast toward them.

Episode 1 set that motion in place. The premiere focused on the infamous Battle of the Gullet. when Triarchy forces attacked Lord Corlys Velaryon’s blockade of King’s Landing. Outnumbered, Team Black risked losing their naval dominance—until Prince Jacaerys and Princess Baela arrived on dragon-back. The tide turned, the battle all but won, and Triarchy archers managed to hit Jace’s dragon, Vermax. The dragon and rider crashed into the waves. Jacaerys freed himself from the dragon before sinking, but Triarchy crossbowmen peppered him from a nearby ship. Both dragon and rider perished.

While that fight reshaped the war at sea, other plots tightened on land. Daemon and his forces celebrated victory and joined with the men of the North. Gwayne Hightower and Criston Cole continued their march across the Riverlands. with fear centered on Team Black’s dragons and the lack of support from Team Green’s winged beasts. In King’s Landing. Alicent conspires against her own sons—sending Aemond out of the city—and creating a path for Rhaenyra to take control of the capital.

What’s coming next is built into the season’s release structure. Like Season 2, Season 3 is eight episodes long instead of 10. Episode 1 aired on Sunday, June 21, 2026 (Recap). Episode 2 airs Sunday, June 28, 2026. Episode 3 follows Sunday, July 5, 2026. Episode 4 arrives Sunday, July 12, 2026. Episode 5 is Sunday, July 19, 2026. Episode 6 lands Sunday, July 26, 2026. Episode 7 is Sunday, August 2, 2026. The final episode—Episode 8—comes Sunday, August 9, 2026.

Season 3 has also been framed by changes fans can already spot: an updated opening credits sequence and theme music accompany the new season.

If you need a reminder of where the story has been heading. Season 1’s time-jumping plot ended with the death of King Viserys I and the fractious road to succession. Team Black—led by his daughter Rhaenyra and her husband and uncle. Daemon—was matched against Team Green. led by the Hightowers and Visery’s sons with Alicent. Aegon and Aemond. all vying for power.

The rivalry escalated in Season 1 when Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys visited Storm’s End to petition House Baratheon to join their cause. Lucerys traded barbs with Alicent’s second son, Aemond, escalating into a dragon chase. Aemond’s giant, ancient beast—overcome with bloodlust—killed Luke and his dragon, drawing deep dismay from Aemond.

When peace couldn’t hold, the violence followed. In Season 2, Daemon sent assassins to kill Aemond in retribution, but they could not find him. Instead, they beheaded Aegon and Helaena’s young son and heir, Jaehaerys.

The second season kept building slowly through shifting alliances. One of the turning points came with the Battle of Rook’s Rest. where Rhaenys was slain and Aegon was mutilated. his own dragon left for dead on the field. Team Black gained an advantage when they recruited dragonriders for their spare dragons from the common folk. but Team Green still held King’s Landing.

That might change. In a secret meeting between Rhaenyra and Alicent. the queen dowager agreed to help Rhaenyra take King’s Landing. even if it costs her son Aegon his head. Lord Corlys Velaryon and his fleet blockaded the city while Team Black commanded from Dragonstone and Daemon battled in the Riverlands. Aemond brooded on the throne he’d taken from his maimed brother. Larys sneaks Aegon out of the city, and Otto Hightower appeared languishing in what looks like a prison cell.

“House of the Dragon” also returns with a stacked cast. Matt Smith stars as Prince Daemon Targaryen. Emma D’Arcy as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen. and Olivia Cooke as Queen Dowager Alicent Hightower. Rhys Ifans plays Ser Otto Hightower and Steve Toussaint plays Lord Corlys Velaryon. Ewan Mitchell is Prince Aemond Targaryen, Tom Glynn-Carney is King Aegon II Targaryen, and Fabien Frankel is Ser Criston Cole. Sonoya Mizuno plays Mysaria; Harry Collett plays Prince Jacaerys Velaryon; Bethany Antonia is Baela Targaryen; Phoebe Campbell is Rhaena Targaryen; and Phia Saban plays Queen Helaena. Matthew Needham is Larys Strong. Freddie Fox is Ser Gwayne Hightower. Abubakar Salim is Alyn of Hull. Gayle Rankin is Alys Rivers. Tom Bennett is Ulf the White. and Kieran Bew is Hugh Hammer.

Newcomers include James Norton as Ormund Hightower, Tommy Flanagan as Roderick Dustin, Dan Fogler as Torrhen Manderly, Tom Cullen as Luthor Largent, Joplin Sibtain as Jon Roxton, Barry Sloane as Adrian Redfort, and Annie Shapero as Alysanne Blackwood.

By the time Episode 2 begins its 68-minute run. the season’s biggest emotional question won’t be about whether the dragons arrive—it’s about what’s left after last week’s losses. and what it means for the fight for King’s Landing. The episode is already scheduled. Now the story takes its next breath.

  1. Wait so the battle of the gullet already happened last week… and then they’re doing episode 2 tonight? I’m confused, like which part is the “clock is ready to turn” thing? HBO better not rush it.

  2. I swear Vermax crashing is gonna be like a setup for a “dragon resurrection” or whatever. Also 21.5 million is insane but it’s still “nearly 2 million short”?? that’s such a dumb way to talk about success. Either way, Triarchy got what they deserved.

  3. If Jacaerys is dead then they’re just gonna replace him with some random cousin, watch. And didn’t they already do a similar naval battle in season 2? Feels recycled. Also why does it say Sunday June 28 like that’s already tomorrow, time zones are fake anymore.
