Horvath and Durazo declare victory in L.A. County races

Lindsey Horvath and Maria Elena Durazo said Tuesday they have won Los Angeles County supervisor races after early election returns put them far ahead—one seeking a second term in District 3 and the other aiming to replace terming-out Hilda Solis in District 1.
Tuesday evening, Lindsey Horvath looked at the early returns and said voters “sent a clear message.” The District 3 supervisor candidate, seeking a second term representing much of the San Fernando Valley and Westside, declared victory after election results showed her taking big early leads.
Horvath is running again for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in District 3. The district includes communities such as Venice and Pacific Palisades. and she was ahead of three challengers: Tonia Arey. a real estate agent who lives in the San Fernando Valley; Tomás Sidenfaden. a tech firm chief executive; and Carmenlina Minasova. a medical professional and resident of the Valley.
In an emailed statement Tuesday evening, Horvath said, “Voters have once again sent a clear message: results matter, accountability matters, and delivering real change matters.”
Across the county. Maria Elena Durazo also declared victory in the District 1 race after early returns showed her leading four other candidates. Durazo. a Democratic state senator from Los Angeles. is seeking the District 1 seat held by Supervisor Hilda Solis. who is terming out after more than a decade on the board.
District 1 stretches from downtown Los Angeles across the San Gabriel Valley. Durazo said her campaign was powered by people who want L.A. County to do more. and she was ahead of Noel Almario. a family healthcare consultant and doula; former La Puente Mayor David Argudo; Elaine Alaniz. president of the Westlake North Neighborhood Council; and Annabella Figueroa Mazariegos. an L.A. County employee.
In an emailed statement. Durazo said. “This campaign was powered by working people. families. immigrants. seniors. and small business owners who believe L.A. County can do better.” She added, “In Sacramento, I’ve fought for workers, housing, health care, and immigrant justice. As your County Supervisor, I will continue that work here at home.”.
In District 3, the Palisades fire has hung over every conversation. Horvath’s district includes the conflagration’s entire burn zone, making local recovery a defining issue of her campaign. Her challengers said she should have done more both before and after the fire. which burned nearly 7. 000 buildings and killed 12 people in Pacific Palisades. Malibu and Topanga in January 2025.
Homelessness, public safety and housing costs have been top issues in both races—concerns that voters say they feel in day-to-day life, regardless of the ballot line.
In District 1, Durazo emphasized her record of helping workers both as a labor leader and in Sacramento. Her challengers framed their own case around proposals they said would help Angelenos coping with high prices and rising rents.
The two victories, declared Tuesday after early leads solidified, point to the central clash in both districts: who can deliver immediate results on housing pressures, public safety, homelessness—and, in Horvath’s case, the ongoing fallout from a disaster that left an entire community scarred.

So they “declared victory” already… is the voting even done or what?
Sounds like LA County politics is just vibes. They’re ahead early so they’re winners, ok. What about the people still waiting on mail ballots?
Durazo replacing Solis?? I thought Solis retired like forever ago, guess I’m wrong. Also “clear message” is what every candidate says right before they claim victory no matter what the numbers do later.
District 3 includes Venice and Pacific Palisades, but somehow it’s still the same old same old. Early lead doesn’t mean anything though, elections be weird. I just don’t get how they’re confident when it’s only “early returns” and there are still challengers running.
