Hollywood’s darkest cases: murder, drugs, and silence

Hollywood’s darkest – From Rob and Michele Reiner’s 2025 slayings to O.J. Simpson’s 1994 double murder, and from Phil Hartman’s 1998 murder-suicide to the ongoing D4vd case, these stories show how quickly glamour can collapse into violence—and how long the consequences last.
The City of Angels can look effortless from a distance. Bright parties, famous faces, the kind of spotlight that makes everything seem polished.
Then you hear about the moments when that shine turns into something else entirely. The kind of moments that don’t fade with time—because the aftermath lives on in courtrooms, in unanswered questions, and in families forced to live with what happened.
Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner
One morning in December 2025, Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner were found murdered inside their home—just hours after celebrating the holiday season with friends at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party.
The violence was discovered by their daughter Romy on December 14, 2025, after their massage therapist alerted her to trouble. Romy went inside and found her father dead. She fled without realizing her mother was also dead inside. Rigor mortis had already set in. and their bodies appeared to have been “butchered” by a “mad man. ” per TMZ reports.
Hours later. their son Nick—whom they’d been arguing with at the Christmas party—was located by Exposition Park in downtown Los Angeles and arrested. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances. including the use of a knife. and he pleaded not guilty to both counts.
The screenwriter was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder in 2020, and his meds had recently changed, allegedly worsening his erratic behavior, according to reports. Nick has pleaded not guilty, and a trial is still to come.
Katy Perry’s ex: Johnny Lewis
In September 2012, police were called to a Los Angeles home after a neighbor reported hearing a woman screaming. The neighbor told officers that a man had jumped over a fence from a nearby property, assaulted a painter and homeowner, and then jumped back toward the first home.
Johnny Lewis was found dead in the driveway. His death was ruled accidental—meaning there was no evidence that he was pushed or tried to die by suicide. But investigators also believed the horrifying scene inside the home was tied to him.
Inside, an elderly woman later identified as Catherine Davis (around 81 years old) and her cat were discovered dead. Catherine was his landlord, and police believe Johnny killed her.
Authorities alleged the Sons of Anarchy star beat Catherine and her cat to death before running outside and getting into an altercation with a neighbor and the neighbor’s handyman, who were both injured. He then ran back into the three-story home and seemingly fell off the roof or balcony.
Catherine was known in the area for running the Writers’ Villa, a bed-and-breakfast for rising performers, directors, and writers, in her home. Johnny previously lived there in 2009 and had moved back in before the incident.
Before his death. Johnny had dealt with a string of drug-related arrests and had recently been released from jail. per CBS News. An autopsy report released that November ruled out that he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the incident. The report also cited nail marks on both sides of his neck and partial strangulation. Catherine reportedly died by manual strangulation and blunt force trauma to her head.
Katy Perry and Johnny Lewis dated from 2005 to 2006. A source told Us Weekly that they had “good times” together but that the Raise Your Voice star was “trouble. ” while the pop star “had to separate from him … to get ahead and focus on her career.” The insider said: “It’s really sad. She could never help him and couldn’t [let herself] go in that direction.” Their time together was described as “a time in her life she cherishes. ” and she was said to be “devastated” over his death. Perry’s songs “The One That Got Away” and “Circle the Drain” are said to be inspired by him.
The Menendez brothers
The case that captivated the world began on August 20, 1989, when Erik and Lyle Menendez stormed into their family home with shotguns and murdered their parents, Jose and Kitty.
At trial, they claimed they killed their parents in self-defense after experiencing years of alleged sexual abuse from their father. Drugs were not a factor in their defense.
While awaiting trial. they reportedly lived in a new kind of freedom—going on an approximately $1 million spending spree in just about six months. cashing in on luxury cars. watches. clothes. and trips. Their lavish lifestyle in Beverly Hills only sharpened the public fascination: the gap between wealth and the brutality of the crime made the case media gold.
The first trial was televised as they recounted the abuse in graphic detail. But the jury couldn’t reach a verdict, forcing a retrial.
This time, they were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.
Interest surged again after Netflix released Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story in 2024. Calls to revise the brothers’ sentence skyrocketed and triggered real legal action.
Just weeks after the release, then–Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón recommended they be resentenced to 50 years to life in prison. Six months later, a judge approved the recommendation, making them immediately eligible for parole.
But in August 2024, with new District Attorney Nathan Hochman in charge, parole officials decided the brothers weren’t ready. They tried other routes, including a petition to overturn their convictions, which didn’t work. They also sought clemency from California Gov. Gavin Newsom. who ordered a 90-day comprehensive evaluation to determine if they pose a risk to the public and to evaluate their rehabilitation. per NBC News. A result has not been shared at this time. For now, they remain behind bars.
O.J. Simpson
O.J. Simpson’s name is inseparable from the trial that gripped the world.
Before the tragedy, he was a widely successful NFL star turned actor best known for movies The Naked Gun and Capricorn One. The story turned on the murder of his ex-wife.
O.J. married Nicole Brown in 1985 and they had children, Sydney and Justin. They divorced in 1992.
Tabloids reported allegations of an affair and drug use on O.J.’s part, while O.J. consistently denied any illicit substance abuse.
Two years later, on June 12, 1994, Nicole and her family enjoyed dinner at an El Lay restaurant. After Nicole’s mother left behind a pair of glasses. Ron Goldman—25-year-old waiter—arrived at Brown’s home that evening to return them. Around midnight, Nicole and Ron were found stabbed to death at her house.
O.J. was in the city that night, but he took a late flight to Chicago and was not questioned by police until he returned the next day. He also wasn’t immediately arrested.
On June 17—one of the most iconic true-crime moments in pop culture—Simpson led authorities on a slow-speed police chase in a white Ford Bronco. Simpson later surrendered and was arrested.
His 1995 trial became a global spectacle. Defense attorneys, including Robert Kardashian, argued he was wrongly accused. Prosecutors believed he was a controlling husband and accused him of abusing his wife. They pointed to blood from the crime scene found in his car and home and said he was unaccounted for for more than an hour on the night of the deaths.
During the trial, prosecutors asked him to try on a pair of gloves believed to be worn by the killer. The defense attorney used that to his advantage with the line: “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit.”
O.J. was acquitted of all charges. In 1997, he was found liable for wrongful death in the double murder, according to a civil jury. He was ordered to pay $33.5 million in damages to the families.
He later went to jail after a 2007 Las Vegas arrest for leading a group of men into a hotel/casino and stealing sports memorabilia, which he claims was his, at gunpoint.
Years later, Nicole’s diaries—discovered and released in a 2024 documentary—detailed more than 60 incidents of domestic abuse she suffered from O.J. Simpson. O.J. died of cancer on April 10, 2024 in Las Vegas.
Phil Hartman
Phil Hartman’s death shocked people who knew him as a beloved Saturday Night Live star.
He starred on SNL for eight seasons and was nicknamed “Glue” by his cast mates for holding the show together. He was also known for his role as anchor Bill McNeal on NewsRadio and for voicing characters on The Simpsons. including Troy McClure. Hartman and his wife Brynn shared two kids, Sean and Birgen.
On May 27, 1998, Brynn went out to dinner with her friend, TV producer Christine Zander. Christine said Brynn had two drinks and “didn’t talk about any problems” at home. Two hours later, Brynn returned and got into an argument with her husband.
Hartman’s friend and attorney Steven Small said. per People. that during the conversation Hartman “made it very clear that if she started using drugs again. that would end the relationship.” Steven said: “She had to get amped up to get his attention. and when she got amped up. he would simply go to sleep. He would withdraw. And in the morning he’d wake up, and everything would be fine.”.
But that morning, he didn’t wake up.
Hartman was killed in his sleep after Brynn shot him three times—twice in the head and once on his right side—with a .38 handgun in the early morning hours of May 28. He was 49. Their kids were asleep in their rooms. Sean later told police he heard sounds like “the slamming of a door” when his father was shot. a source close to the family told People.
After the murder, Brynn called her friend Ron Douglas, then went to his home in Studio City. She admitted the killing, but Ron didn’t believe her until she showed him the gun. He convinced Brynn to go back home, and when Ron saw Phil’s body, he called the cops.
While Ron was on the phone, Brynn locked herself in her bedroom. Officers entered the home and she died by suicide while lying in bed next to her dead husband. Sean was outside, and Birgen was being escorted out of the home when she died.

Sid Vicious & Nancy Spungen
Sid Vicious met Nancy Spungen in 1977 in London’s punk scene. The account describes their relationship as a toxic, co-dependent bond fueled by heavy drug use, volatility, and obsession. Friends and bandmates even tried to get them to split up early.
The relationship turned grim in August 1978 when they moved to New York City and made a home at the Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan. By then, Sid’s band the Sex Pistols had disbanded, and Nancy was acting as the bassist’s manager.
The tragedy arrived October 11, after Sid and Nancy decided to throw a party in their tiny hotel room. The account says Sid took about 30 tablets of Tuinal, a barbiturate mix, and was comatose for most of the night.

D4vd and Celeste Rivas Hernandez (ongoing)
One of the most recent and gut-wrenching Hollywood true-crime developments centers on a missing teen and a music career now entangled in homicide allegations.
In early 2024, 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez was reported missing three times, and she was 13 when the first report was made. A missing person poster from around that time said she was last seen around February 14.
Starting in January 2024, Celeste was seen hanging out with musician D4vd, including on Twitch. Despite their massive age gap—and the fact that Celeste was a minor—the account says they were described as being in a relationship. Friends and family were reportedly concerned.
Just one day after Celeste would’ve turned 15, her body was found dismembered and decomposing in the back of a Tesla at a police impound yard. The vehicle was registered to the rapper.
The car had reportedly been parked not far from where D4vd had been living in the Hollywood Hills. It was later taken to a police impound yard, where an employee noticed an awful smell.
At the time, the Romantic Homicide vocalist was on tour, which he later canceled. He attempted to lay low as the investigation continued, leading to his arrest on suspicion of killing the teenager in April 2026.
He was charged with first-degree murder with special circumstances in the homicide. as well as lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14. and mutilating a body. Authorities say they found a “significant amount” of child sexual abuse images on his phone. though it’s unclear if those materials feature the teen.
An initial toxicology screening of Celeste’s remains reportedly showed a “presumptive positive” for benzodiazepines, methamphetamines, and MDMA. Subsequent drug screenings determined methamphetamine was “inconclusive” and MDMA was NOT detected. Regardless, neither drugs nor alcohol were determined to have contributed to her death.
The cause of death was described as “2 penetrating wounds of the torso with smooth edges that may represent sharp force injuries.” The account details the wound measurements: the wound on the upper abdomen measured [3/4 inch length and 1.5 inches deep]. penetrating the liver. and the wound on the left chest measured [9/16 inch length and 2 inches deep]. penetrating one of the left intercostal spaces with disruption of the adjacent ribs’ cortical surfaces.
If convicted, he could face the death penalty. The case is still ongoing and no conclusion has been made at this time. D4vd has pleaded not guilty to the charges connected to Celeste’s death.
In story after story. the same brutal truth emerges from the facts themselves: glamor doesn’t protect anyone—and when violence arrives. the consequences don’t stay contained to the day it happened. They spill into the lives of families. the work of investigators. the arguments in court. and the public’s memory for years.
All these cases leave one question hanging over every headline: what horror story keeps you up at night?
