His Dark Materials Becomes the Weekend Watch Pick

HBO’s BBC collaboration His Dark Materials, which ran from 2019 to 2022, is drawing fresh attention as a top iTunes-streaming choice, with performances led by Dafne Keen and a fantasy-heavy story that blends sci-fi mystery, theology, and the search for missing

By the time most shows feel settled, His Dark Materials was already reaching for bigger questions. On HBO, the three-season BBC collaboration arrived in stateside homes as a 2019 television adaptation of Philip Pullman’s fantasy trilogy. The run felt slow-burn at first. but it steadily gathered momentum — season by season — and even after its end. it’s continued to win back viewers.

The proof might be happening in real time. Over the last week, the series has been among the most-watched shows on iTunes, based on streaming data from FlixPatrol. It’s not just nostalgia doing the work, either. The story’s central mystery — the “Dust” phenomenon — and its ability to fold together genres make it an easy recommendation for both first-time viewers and anyone returning for a rewatch.

Dafne Keen leads as Lyra. an orphan who sets out to find a missing friend and instead stumbles into multiworld conspiracies that reshape what she thought she knew about herself. The series leans hard into the strange: multidimensional travel and dark matter are woven throughout. and theology is used as a framing device for the fantasy elements that guide the plot.

Keen’s performance anchors a cast that also includes Amir Wilson as Will, Ruth Wilson as Mrs. Colter, James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee. While the show never found the same runaway mainstream breakout as Game of Thrones. it has remained firmly in the conversation as one of HBO’s best series.

Critics’ reception tracked that staying power. His Dark Materials began with a 77% score on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and finished with a 90% score in the third and final season. which aired in 2022. The series’ last stretch may not have chased mass dominance. but it did land — and it left a finished product viewers still talk about years later.

The show itself is now built for easy weekend planning: all seasons of His Dark Materials are available to stream on HBO Max. And if you’re looking for more than a single episode commitment. the series’ complete arc is exactly the kind of binge that rewards patience — the kind HBO has specialized in. from The Wire to cult favorites like The Leftovers.

A final detail seals the appeal for fans who want the full credits list: the series ran from 2019 to 2022. It was on BBC One. with directors including William McGregor. Amit Gupta. Leanne Welham. Charles Martin. Otto Bathurst. Euros Lyn. Dawn Shadforth. Harry Wootliff. and Jamie Childs. Writers included Jack Thorne. Francesca Gardiner. 1. Dafne Keen being in it is enough for me. But is this the one where they talk about demons or like science stuff? Sounds like a weird mix honestly.

  2. My cousin said it’s “the theology one” which… ok? I tried watching season one and it felt slow, so I didn’t get the dust thing at all. Maybe I should restart though since iTunes says it’s trending or whatever.

  3. I don’t trust any “most watched on iTunes” lists, they always feel rigged. Also “multiworld conspiracies” sounds like they ripped off that other show everyone mentions (the multiverse one). I’ll check it later I guess, but if it’s 3 seasons and still confusing then rip.
