Highlands College Appoints Lance Chatfield as New Principal

Lance Chatfield, an engineer turned educator, has been named the next Principal of Highlands College, succeeding Jo Terry-Marchant in 2026.
Highlands College has officially announced that Lance Chatfield will take the helm as its next Principal starting in September 2026.
His appointment marks a significant transition for the institution, as he brings a unique blend of industrial expertise and academic leadership to the role. Before dedicating his career to education 21 years ago, Chatfield originally trained as an electrical engineer.
This shift from engineering to education highlights a career defined by technical growth, further bolstered by an Executive MBA.. His national recognition, including the prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize for his contributions to maritime education, underscores a track record of high-level achievement.
Choosing a leader with both industry and academic experience signals a strategic move by the college to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world professional requirements.
Throughout his career, Chatfield has been deeply involved in shaping modern curricula. He has taught civil engineering at the degree level and spearheaded the development of specialized programs, such as the UK’s only foundation degree focused on marine autonomy.
Chatfield expressed that he feels honored to step into the position during a period of growth. He noted that the college is essential for supporting diverse learners and bolstering the local economy, adding that he looks forward to expanding professional pathways.
He will take over the responsibilities from the outgoing Principal, Jo Terry-Marchant. She is retiring on July 10 following a distinguished 35-year career in education, nearly two decades of which have been dedicated to Highlands College.
In a recent statement, Terry-Marchant praised the selection of her successor. She highlighted Chatfield’s energy and vision as key assets that will help the college navigate its future challenges effectively.
As the college prepares for this leadership transition, the focus remains on maintaining the inclusive environment and strong educational foundations established over the years.
This leadership change represents a pivotal moment that will likely redefine how the college aligns its academic offerings with the evolving demands of the modern workforce.
