Henry Winkler ‘went dark’ after ‘Happy Days’ ended

Henry Winkler says he struggled for years after Happy Days ended, describing a “went dark” period where he wasn’t sure he’d ever do anything as powerful as Fonzie again—before pivoting into producing and landing new roles.

When Happy Days wrapped, Henry Winkler didn’t immediately feel like a TV legend cruising into his next chapter. He says he was sitting in his office, staring at the uncertainty and asking himself a question that sounded like fear disguised as reflection.

“After Happy Days finished, I’m sitting in my office,” Winkler recalled. “All I’m getting are Fonzie-like — I have no idea. ‘Am I ever going to do anything that is as powerful?’ And I went dark. I went dark. ” the actor. who portrayed Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli on the comedy series between 1974 and 1984. told fellow TV star Ted Danson on the “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast.

Winkler added that he wasn’t sure what came next. “I thought, ‘I have no idea what I’m going to do, whether I could do it again, and I’m over.’”

The emotional punch of that admission is its timing: it wasn’t the end of the show that hurt him most—it was the moment that followed. Winkler said his acting career paused dramatically for “eight or nine years” after Happy Days ended. even though he used that time to work behind the camera. In that gap, the stardust he’d been given didn’t automatically translate into a clear new version of him.

“The greatest thing you learn is to pivot,” Winkler stated. “You’re going on a way, and you’re thinking, ‘Oh, I gotta stay. I can’t do anything else. I don’t want to do anything else.’ You have to learn to pivot. And when you pivot, the universe opens up and all of this generous stardust falls on you.”.

For Winkler, the pivot didn’t happen because everything suddenly felt easy. He was apprehensive about stepping into production, but he credits his lawyer, Skip Brittenham III, with helping him make the move. “How wonderful, that man changed my life,” Winkler told Danson.

Once he accepted the new path, he says job offers started coming in. Over the course of his career. Winkler has worked as a producer on shows such as MacGyver. as well as Happy Days and Dallas reunions. And after that shift. he also returned to the screen in roles including Scream. The Waterboy. Parks and Recreation. and Arrested Development. His acting credits now total 167.

Winkler’s reinvention didn’t stop at television. He’s also an accomplished children’s book author, with his latest book—Detective Duck: The Mystery at Emerald Pond—having been published in 2025.

And if there’s one detail that makes his optimism feel personal rather than packaged. it’s how he talks about admiration itself. On Instagram, Winkler posts selfies with the celebrities he admires, paired with heartfelt messages. In the last few months alone. he’s shared his love for Lewis Capaldi. Meryl Streep. Quinta Brunson. Bruce Springsteen. Jake Johnson. Adam Sandler. and many more.

  1. I mean Happy Days ended and then what, he thought Fonzie was gonna be the only thing that worked? Sounds like imposter syndrome but okay. Still wild he says he was “over” for like 8-9 years.

  2. Wait why is everyone saying “went dark” like it was depression? I thought he meant like he stopped being on TV for a bit. Also didn’t he do something with kids or that handyman show? Like I swear I remember him later so idk.

  3. This is probably why actors don’t like typecasting. But also he says he was in his office staring at uncertainty and then pivoted and found new roles, so like… what’s the point, you can just pivot? I get it emotionally, but it kinda sounds like a sales pitch for producing. Also Ted Danson podcast, of course it came out on a podcast lol.
