Hegseth pushes out Donahue as purge escalates

Hegseth escalates – The Army says Gen. Christopher T. Donahue, who leads U.S. Army Europe and Africa and NATO’s Allied Land Command, will step down in July after just 18 months. The move lands as Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and President Donald Trump face mounting criticism

For many in uniform, the shock comes in the timing. On Tuesday, the Army announced that Gen. Christopher T. Donahue—commanding general of U.S. Army Europe and Africa and commander of NATO’s Allied Land Command—will step down in July after serving in the job for only 18 months.

Donahue’s removal is landing with unusual force because he’s widely regarded as one of the Army’s most respected officers. and because the administration’s posture toward Europe and NATO has been in flux. Critics argue the decision fits into a broader pattern: a growing roster of distinguished officers pushed out or denied promotion for partisan or personal reasons and/or because they are Black. brown. or a woman.

The concern isn’t confined to careers or reputations. Critics warn this kind of purge weakens the military at the very moment the United States could face potential conflict with China, and after the limits of the force have been exposed by the Iran war.

At the center of the controversy is what Hegseth’s approach is presumed to be aiming for. Historically, the U.S. military has been built to be apolitical by design—loyal to the Constitution and the American people rather than to any president or politician. But as described in the broader critique of Trump’s leadership style. a personalist view has taken hold: President Donald Trump is portrayed as seeing himself as the state. and as believing the military should be transformed into an extension of his personal will and power.

That debate is playing out alongside an aggressive push for resources. As the personnel moves continue, the administration is simultaneously seeking a record $1.5 trillion defense budget for 2027. The figure represents an approximately 40% single-year increase and would be among the largest defense budgets in American history.

Put together. critics say the strategy follows an authoritarian playbook: remove independent officers. then secure allegiance—first through personnel. then through the scale of funding that comes with it. Whether this is framed as modernization or as control. the impact is already being felt inside the institutions charged with fighting the next war.

The Army’s announcement about Donahue sets the immediate direction. A commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa and NATO’s Allied Land Command. stepping down after 18 months. signals that the administration’s reshaping of senior leadership is not pausing for optics—or for the question of whether the military can afford churn while global risks keep rising.
