Heat, crashes, signals: Seattle’s morning hits trouble

35th/Fauntleroy signal – A heat alert stayed in effect Monday morning as multiple crashes snarled West Seattle and the bridge approach, while a key signal at 35th and Fauntleroy briefly went down. Separately, Seattle’s first World Cup matchday starts at noon with major area restrictio
At 6:21 a.m., drivers heading toward the bottom of the Highland Park Way hill got the kind of warning no one wants: a crash just west of West Marginal, with most lanes blocked. Live camera footage showed the blockage clearly, and police were on scene.
By 6:34 a.m., the SDOT live feed screenshot was circulating inside traffic updates: police were calling for three tow trucks. Fire crews were also sent, but there were no details on injuries yet.
The morning didn’t ease. At 6:51 a.m., another crash was reported at California/102nd in Arbor Heights. Dispatch relayed that no one was hurt, but it was blocking at least part of that intersection.
Around the same time, attention shifted from the roadway to a traffic signal. Texters reported signal trouble at 35th/Fauntleroy. Then, by 7:03 a.m., police told dispatch that all lanes were reopening at Highland Park Way/West Marginal.
The 35th/Fauntleroy issue lingered just long enough to keep people watching. Another text came in at 7:28 a.m. about the same signal problem. At 9:00 a.m., another texter said the 35th/Fauntleroy signal was fixed.
Crash reports continued along major corridors. At 7:35 a.m., a crash was reported on the eastbound West Seattle Bridge at the Spokane on-ramp, involving a semi-truck. At 8:01 a.m. there was a crash at 47th/Wildwood involving a truck and a bicycle rider. with police and fire on the way. That bicycle crash is being covered separately as a fatal crash.
All of this was happening under a weather alert that refused to let the day start easy. The National Weather Service Heat Advisory remained in effect until 5 a.m. Tuesday, following a record high of 89 on Sunday. Monday’s forecast called for more sunshine and a high in the upper 80s.
The day’s other big disruption arrived with the calendar. Monday, June 15, 2026 is the first Seattle World Cup matchday at Lumen Field, with Belgium vs. Egypt starting at noon. Beginning by 8 a.m., the area near the stadium would be off-limits to motor vehicles.
Metro bus reroutes reflected that restriction. If a bus usually travels through the zone shown in the matchday alert, it will be rerouted, and for West Seattle that primarily means Route 21.
West Seattle’s water options expanded for the matchday: the West Seattle Water Taxi added runs today—10 a.m. from Pier 50, and 10:15 a.m. from Seacrest. Otherwise, it’s on the summer schedule, with extra Friday/Saturday/Sunday runs and later-night schedules Fridays and Saturdays.
Washington State Ferries moved to the summer sailing schedule. The Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route stayed on its regular three-boat schedule, with the usual reminder to check the alert page for last-minute changes.
School calendars were also squeezing into the same week. For those not already out, the Seattle and Highline districts’ last day is Wednesday, while Vashon’s last day is Thursday—an especially relevant point for West Seattle commuters who are traveling as school ends.
Traffic cameras brought another layer of frustration. The city cameras’ updating-framegrab feature was still not working. The update noted it had been reported, with no ETA for restoration. State cameras were working, including one in the regular lineup: 1st Avenue South Bridge. The instruction was clear—people can check live video for any SDOT camera via the SDOT map.
If trouble showed up on bridges, streets, paths, or water, the hotline number was given for reporting: 206-293-6302—safely, and after reporting to authorities if responders weren’t already on scene.
By mid-morning. some pressure had eased on at least one front: police said all lanes were reopening at Highland Park Way/West Marginal. and later updates said the 35th/Fauntleroy signal was fixed. But with crashes stretching from West Seattle neighborhoods to the bridge ramps—and heat still in the background—this Monday morning already carried the shape of a day that would demand extra patience.
