Heat 2 heats up as filming starts November

After a year of negotiations, Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio are set to star in Michael Mann’s “Heat 2,” with shooting planned to begin in November. The casting hunt is still shifting around a villain role and other key parts, while Amazon MGM Studios sa

By the time November arrives, one of Hollywood’s most patient pursuits could finally lock into place.

“Heat 2” is moving toward production with Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio set to star in Michael Mann’s sequel. which will start shooting in November. four individuals with knowledge of the production told TheWrap. While two people said the deals are already closed. two other individuals said the deals are in final negotiations but expected to close.

Bale is set to play Vincent Hanna, the LAPD Robbery Homicide detective played by Al Pacino in the original film. DiCaprio is set to play Chris Shiherlis, who was played by Val Kilmer.

Michael Mann will return to write and direct the sequel. The project began as a novel written by Mann and Meg Gardiner, released in 2022. “Heat 2” is described as both a prequel and a sequel, taking place before and after the events of Mann’s 1995 film “Heat.”

Amazon MGM Studios has pushed back on any sense of finality. A spokesperson for Amazon MGM Studios said that no deals have been finalized.

The casting search is still very much alive. Adam Driver is being sought for the villain, Wardell, and is deep in negotiations. Stephen Graham is also in talks to play Neil McCauley—the Robert De Niro role from the first film. A number of actresses are vying for the role of Sharlene. originated by Ashley Judd. while other A-list names are circling the project. TheWrap understands.

The first “Heat” has its own kind of mythology, and that reputation is part of what keeps “Heat 2” in motion. Released in 1995, the film was based on “L.A. Takedown,” which Mann wrote and directed as a television pilot for an NBC series. The series was not picked up and the pilot aired as a movie on August 27, 1989.

That earlier version is often described as an alternate-universe take. with Scott Plank and Alex McArthur as versions of the characters later played by Pacino and De Niro. The 1995 film went on to make $187.4 million on a budget of $60 million. and it remains widely viewed as one of the greatest heist films of all time. known for its novelistic complexity and compelling characters.

Mann had said he intended to turn the novel into a film shortly before it was released, and DiCaprio, Bale, Driver, and Graham have been connected to the project for some time.

Behind the scenes, production economics and studio strategy are also part of the draw. Amazon MGM Studios beat out other studios for “Heat 2” when Warner Bros. dropped it over the budget, which reached $200 million at that studio. The budget is now closer to $170 million, according to two insiders. The production is getting nearly $40 million from the California tax incentive.

The producing team centers on Jerry Bruckheimer, with United Artists’ Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt producing. Executive producers are Shane Salerno and Eric Roth, both screenwriters who have worked with Mann for many years. The collaboration is also a long time coming: this marks Bruckheimer and Mann’s first collaboration in 45 years. since “Thief. ” Mann’s first theatrical feature.

The reason Amazon MGM Studios pursued the project, according to the account here, came down to timing and monetization. The decision leaned on the studio’s ability to monetize the project long after the theatrical window expires. and on the original film’s long tail—consistently one of Warner Bros.’ most lucrative rental titles.

The ambition on screen is described as extraordinary. One insider said the scale is “‘Spartacus’ with machine guns. ‘John Wick’ times 1. 000.” The action sequences are said to dwarf those from the original film. including the climactic bank robbery/shootout—famed for its realism and used as a training film for law enforcement officers to this day.

There’s a specific pressure in the casting, too. When it came to assembling the two leads. the challenge was to find two performers who could replicate the epic teaming of Pacino and De Niro from the first film. The path chosen. according to the account here. was DiCaprio and Bale—actors described as able to stand toe-to-toe with each other. and notable for the fact that they have never co-starred in a movie together.

One detail that has stretched the process: DiCaprio’s deal. which is described as incredibly complex to make. stretching out over six or seven months. The scheduling challenge was not limited to one actor. either—arranging the calendars for Bale and DiCaprio alongside other actors being eyed for key roles added another layer of difficulty.

Mann and DiCaprio’s pursuit goes back nearly 30 years. The closest they came was “The Aviator. ” which Mann was originally meant to direct but decided against after coming off two back-to-back biopics in “The Insider” and “Ali.” Martin Scorsese ultimately directed “The Aviator.” Now. their time has finally come.

The hope for “Heat 2” is that it lands like a multi-generational event. with the goodwill from the first film fueling support for a sequel. It also arrives as another tentpole for Amazon MGM Studios. Earlier this year, “Project Hail Mary” grossed over $680 million worldwide, and the studio is pushing further into theatrical.

For DiCaprio, “Heat 2” is also positioned as a next step. After Paul Thomas Anderson’s Oscar-winning “One Battle After Another” for Warner Bros., he shot Martin Scorsese’s ghost story drama “What Happens at Night” for Apple earlier this year.

Bale, meanwhile, is coming off “The Bride!” for Warner Bros. He will next be seen in Amazon MGM’s “Madden,” directed by David O. Russell, where he plays Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis.

When “Heat 2” begins rolling in November. the biggest question may not be whether the story ambition is large—it’s whether the casting pieces can lock cleanly into place fast enough to match the schedule. The deals may be “already closed” in some versions of the story. but Amazon MGM’s spokesperson insists nothing is finalized yet. In a project built on precision and pursuit, that difference could matter.

  1. Wait I thought Heat 2 already happened like a while ago. Also Christian Bale as Hanna is kinda weird… Al Pacino is like forever though.

  2. If they’re still negotiating deals how is it “set” for November lol. And Leonardo as the guy Val Kilmer played? I’m already mad it’s not Kilmer back, but I guess he’s busy.

  3. Heat 2 is gonna be awesome but I don’t get why they’re hiring new people for the villain role again. Like is the villain the same one from the first movie or what? Half the cast sounds “final” and the other half sounds like rumor roulette. Either way, Michael Mann better bring the long crime scenes or I’m out.
