Actress Shira Scott Astrof is speaking out after learning that Matthew Werner, a convicted serial sex offender she accused of assaulting her after they met through a dating app, could be eligible for parole in October — just months after being sent to state prison.

Speaking to The New York Post, the actress stated, “It’s like a never-ending battle and it shouldn’t be this hard. There’s no justice system here. We have to be our own advocate.”

Astrof, whose credits include The Office and Criminal Minds, also described Werner as “a coward” who attacked her when she was vulnerable, adding, “He has no soul.”

Werner, 49, was ordered to serve four years behind bars in February after violating probation for the third time. The sentence came after Astrof and other women accused him of sexual assault and pushed for greater accountability.

Astrof was assaulted in March 2015 after meeting Werner through a dating app, where he had posed as a Swedish soccer star. She later told a Los Angeles County court that the encounter left her severely injured and emotionally traumatized.

For years, she was publicly identified only as Jane Doe One in court documents. She chose to reveal her identity in 2023 as she began speaking more openly about the case and advocating for survivors of sexual violence.

She recounted the traumatic incident later on, as reported by ABC, where she said that she was “sickened and saddened that this rapist is walking free right now. Every minute he’s not in prison is a minute he can hurt another woman.”

“That night, eight years ago, I was assaulted and victimized in a way that I still can’t really describe,” Astrof said of the night.

“He dislocated my shoulder. I had choke marks. I still have problems with my neck. I still remember the pain and the shock of it,” she continued.

Werner was arrested in Las Vegas on February 28, 2023, amid an investigation into a series of sexual assault cases dating back nearly a decade in several Los Angeles neighborhoods, including North Hollywood, Mid-City, Hollywood and Woodland Hills.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced charges against Werner in April 2023, including three counts of sexual assault, including rape, involving two women.

Later that year, Werner accepted a plea deal that initially kept him out of prison. He received a four-year suspended sentence, was required to participate in a sex offender treatment program and was placed on the National Sex Offender Registry.

The outcome enraged Astrof, who made a statement calling him “a deceitful, disgusting, pathetic conman” and telling him directly, “You’re a predator and you are a coward.”

Astrof’s warning, however, proved accurate.

Werner went on to violate the terms of his probation three times. The final violation involved traveling out of state without permission from his probation department, ultimately leading to the prison sentence imposed in February.

Nevertheless, his potential parole eligibility in October has renewed Astrof’s concerns about how long he will remain behind bars.
