HBO’s Harry Potter Series Finally Brings Peeves to Screen

Peter Serafinowicz has been cast as Peeves the Poltergeist in HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” series, marking the character’s long-awaited on-screen return after he was cut from the original film franchise. The series is set to launch this December on HBO and HB
Peeves never had a quiet moment in Hogwarts. Now he’s set to finally take his place on screen.
Peter Serafinowicz has been cast as Peeves the Poltergeist in HBO’s “Harry Potter” series. The cheeky ghost is a fan-favorite who is known for causing trouble in the Hogwarts halls, and he did not appear in any of the original “Harry Potter” movies.
Serafinowicz, repped by Curtis Brown Group, UTA, 3 Arts, and Peikoff Mahan, most recently appeared in last year’s live-action version of “How to Train Your Dragon.” He’s also known for playing Edgar Covington in “Parks and Recreation” and Denarian Saal in 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
For audiences who follow his work beyond live action, Serafinowicz also brings a substantial voice and animation résumé. His credits range from voicing Darth Maul in “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” to Big Daddy in “Sing” and “Sing 2.”
Fans have long wondered why Peeves didn’t make it into the earlier film adaptations. In the original movie series. Peeves was set to be played by British comedian Rik Mayall. who died in 2014. before being cut due to time constraints. Mayall once described the brief window he had: “I did a little bit of filming then I went home and got the money – significant – then a month later they said ‘Rik. sorry about this. you’re not in the film. ’” he said in an interview.
Even after being left out, Mayall was offered tickets to the film’s opening night. He passed them along to his children because he was busy shooting another project. “I hadn’t told my kids I wasn’t in it yet,” he recalled. “And they came back and said ‘It’s bloody good make-up. You didn’t look like yourself at all, dad, it’s really good’ — they thought I was playing Hagrid.”.
HBO’s “Harry Potter” adaptation is reportedly planned as a seven-season run. with each season tackling one novel in J.K. Rowling’s book series. The approach. according to WBD’s president of global streaming and games. JB Perrette—speaking last year—has been to go deeper than what a two-hour movie can capture.
“The scope of the production. the detail. meticulousness of what they’re going through and what they’ve built takes theatrical to just a whole different level. ” Perrette said. “And so when you think of the love of that franchise and what you can do in a series: can go deeper. can tell more of the story. can tell more of the pieces that you didn’t get to capture in a two-hour movie … I really think this is the streaming event of the decade.”.
The cast announced so far includes Dominic McLaughlin as the titular Potter. with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. John Lithgow will play Hogwarts headmaster Dumbledore, while Janet McTeer steps in as Professor McGonagall. Paapa Essiedu will play Snape, and Nick Frost has been cast as Rubeus Hagrid.
“Harry Potter,” written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, is set to launch this December exclusively on HBO and HBO Max. Season 2 is currently in production.
Mark Mylod serves as exec producer and director of multiple episodes of the series for HBO, in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, along with David Heyman of Heyday Films, are executive producers.
For Peeves, the wait has been long enough to become part of the legend—first a filmed role that vanished under time constraints, then years of fans asking why. This time, he’s not just a rumor in the margins. He’s been named, cast, and brought back for the halls.

Peeves better be loud as hell. Like actually annoying in a fun way.
Wait so Peeves is finally coming back?? I thought that was like, a whole deleted thing forever. HBO really said “let’s add the chaos” lol.
How did they cut Peeves for time?? Harry Potter movies always felt long already. Also Peter Serafinowicz sounds familiar… isn’t he the guy from those Star Wars voices? Idk I just hope they don’t make Peeves too “nice” or whatever.
Rik Mayall not being in it still makes me mad for no reason like I feel personally betrayed. But okay, Peeves on screen is cool I guess. December is gonna be so crowded with shows though, hope HBO doesn’t mess it up. Also “Peeves never had a quiet moment” like… yeah that’s literally his whole thing right?
