Hawks extend Quin Snyder, seeking stability after turnover

The Atlanta Hawks extended head coach Quin Snyder’s contract on Monday, with the team keeping the terms undisclosed. The decision follows a season marked by major roster change—including the midseason departure of four-time NBA All-Star Trae Young—and a playof

On Monday, the Atlanta Hawks moved to lock in their head coach, extending Quin Snyder’s contract. The team did not disclose the length or financial terms of the multi-year deal in its announcement.

For Snyder, the extension comes after a season that tested Atlanta’s ability to adapt. The Hawks finished the regular season 46-36. and they delivered the franchise’s first outright playoff berth since the 2020-21 season. It was also a year of significant turnover. with Atlanta reshaping its roster midseason and parting ways with four-time NBA All-Star Trae Young.

Snyder’s steady hand was visible again after the trade deadline. He surpassed 500 career wins in March during an impressive post-trade deadline surge. becoming the 41st coach in NBA history to reach the milestone. Atlanta’s 46 regular-season wins were their most since the 2015-2016 season—something the playoffs couldn’t fully erase. but something the team clearly wanted to build on.

The postseason ended in April in the first round against the New York Knicks, with Atlanta falling in Game 6. Even in that defeat, there was one bright marker: Atlanta is the only team to beat the Knicks in the postseason so far.

This extension is Snyder’s second contract extension with the Hawks since joining the franchise during the 2022-2023 season. It also lands shortly after Atlanta reshaped its basketball leadership. The Hawks promoted Onsi Saleh from general manager to president of basketball operations and then signed him to a long-term deal in late May.

Saleh framed the decision as a commitment to keeping the program moving forward through change. “Quin has been a phenomenal leader for our team. and extending his contract reflects our commitment to stability and sustained growth as we build toward high-level success. ” Saleh said in a statement. “Over the past three seasons and amid an evolving roster. we’ve seen clear. measurable progress. which is a testament to the culture he’s established and the leadership he brings every day.

“He has created an environment where our players are challenged, supported, and empowered to grow, and that focus on player development has elevated our entire program.”

Snyder’s track record with development has been part of Atlanta’s story under his tenure. Under Snyder. the Hawks had back-to-back recipients of the NBA’s Most Improved Player award—Dyson Daniels. who won in 2025. and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. who earned the honor after a breakout 2026 campaign in his first year with the Hawks.

With the extension now in place, the Hawks are signaling that despite the roster churn and the early playoff exit, they want continuity at the top as they pursue their next leap.

  1. Undisclosed terms like always… so basically nobody knows if he got paid or if they just said “stability” lol. But if Trae Young left midseason then how is that stable?

  2. Wait, I thought the Hawks already fired him or something? Game 6 vs the Knicks and they still extend him, that seems wild. Also 46-36 isn’t bad but “first outright playoff berth since 2020-21” like… ok that’s cool but it’s not like they won anything.

  3. This is why I don’t trust “keeps moving forward” PR. They’re saying roster turnover and then extending the coach like that fixes everything. They beat the Knicks only team so far? that sounds like a weird stat to hang your hat on. If Trae being gone was the big reason for the surge after the deadline, then Snyder just happened to be there… unless they’re hiding why it worked.
