Havertz sparks Germany’s rout of Curacao after underdogs’ 1st World Cup goal

Havertz sparks – Kai Havertz struck twice as Germany overwhelmed World Cup first-timers Curaçao 7-1 in Houston, allowing the Caribbean debutants to score their first tournament goal through Livano Comenencia before Germany pulled away late in the opening half and piled on afte

Houstons Stadium. normally known as NRG Stadium. turned into a stage for a debut moment and a rout at the same time. Germany came out sharp. Curaçao found a rare opening in a World Cup debut that sent their fans into a frenzy. and then the match slipped away so fast it hardly felt like the same game by the time Havertz made it 3-1 at the end of the first half.

Sunday’s group match ended with Germany running out 7-1 winners. their four-time champion status reasserted after underdogs Curaçao had taken the lead in the crowd’s emotions if not the scoreboard. Kai Havertz scored two goals—one penalty before halftime and one more in the 88th minute—while the rest of the damage was spread across the lineup as Germany pulled away in waves.

Curaçao made the dream feel real early. Livano Comenencia leveled the match at 1-1 in the 21st minute with a left-footed shot through traffic from the center of the box. their first World Cup goal and the kind of moment that turns a first appearance into a lasting memory for a small nation. Germany immediately responded by finding the lead again in the 38th minute when Nico Schlotterbeck headed home off Nathaniel Brown’s corner kick.

Before halftime, the score widened further. Havertz converted a penalty shot into the left goal in first-half stoppage time to make it 3-1 after Felix Nmecha was tripped in the box by Riechedly Bazoer. Germany had controlled the rest of the half, and the second half carried that momentum straight into the numbers.

Jamal Musiala extended the lead just two minutes after the restart. scoring in the 47th minute with a right-footed shot across the goalkeeper’s area. Brown added a goal in the 68th minute to push Germany’s advantage to 5-1. and Deniz Undav made it 6-1 in the 78th. Havertz sealed the night in the 88th minute with his second goal. completing a performance that made the late comeback feel impossible for Curaçao.

The rout did not reach the most explosive marks in World Cup history, but the margin was still telling. Germany’s 7-1 result falls short of the World Cup record of nine goals, a feat that has happened three times, the most recent when Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1 in 1982.

Germany’s dominance started even before Comenencia’s equalizer. In the sixth minute. Nmecha one-timed it with his right foot into the near post just inside the upper box. assisted by Florian Wirtz. to make it 1-0. The crowd at the match—68. 021 strong—was overwhelmingly behind Germany. but Curaçao’s traveling supporters kept their presence felt. cheering as the smallest country to ever appear in the tournament took the kind of step no one forgets.

There was also a sense that this tournament, with its bright stage and sharp storylines, was reshuffling the usual hierarchy. Manuel Neuer—40 years old—made his first appearance for Germany in almost two years after coming out of international retirement for the tournament. and he finished with one save. And on the sideline. the age gap between coaches became its own kind of headline: Curaçao’s 78-year-old coach Dick Advocaat faced Germany’s 38-year-old Julian Nagelsmann. the youngest coach in this year’s tournament.

Germany will now look ahead to redemption and recovery of their own tournament hopes, heading into their next match against Ivory Coast in Toronto on Saturday. Curaçao’s attention turns to their second outing as well, with Ecuador next on Saturday in Kansas City.

The sequence of goals told the story in real time: Curaçao made history in the 21st minute. Germany answered with Schlotterbeck’s header in the 38th. Havertz converted the penalty before halftime. and then the second half turned into a steady climb—Musiala. Brown. Undav. and Havertz again—until the 7-1 final score left almost no room for a comeback to take shape.

  1. Havertz really just bullied them huh. First World Cup goal for Curacao though, respect. Also 7-1 is wild like what even happened after the 3-1.

  2. Wait Germany won 7-1 but Curaçao “took the lead” in emotions? That’s kinda messed up lol. I feel like this article is saying Curaçao played better until the penalty? But then Havertz did two and the rest was “waves”??

  3. I saw the headline and thought it was about Germany routing Curacao in the standings or something, not like an actual score. Havertz scoring a penalty in stoppage time… so basically he ruined their whole dream in like 10 minutes. Also why is everyone acting like Curacao is “underdogs” when I didn’t even know they were in it until now.
