Behind the on-screen intensity, Pillion also carries an almost surprising scale. It was made for just $1 million — a figure that’s still described as a bigger budget than the horror hit Obsession. That contrast has helped the film stand out, even before it reached a wider audience.

That wider audience has arrived on HBO Max. Recently, Pillion made its debut on the service and has become an instant hit. At the time of writing, it is one of the ten most-streamed movies on HBO Max in the U.S., a list topped by the viral medical thriller Contagion.

  1. So basically everyone’s streaming Harry Potter and then suddenly that other movie too… cool I guess.

  2. Wait I thought Pillion was like a kids show??? The title sounds soft. But it’s R-rated romance/BDSM?? That feels like a whole different vibe than Harry Potter lol.

  3. 277 million views in 48 hours is crazy, but also aren’t those bots half the time? People keep saying J.K. Rowling controversy is “noise” like it doesn’t matter. Anyway if Radcliffe is in Swiss Army Man again I’m watching that one first.

  4. I don’t even know what Pillion is, but if it’s “coming after the films” then it’s probably just like fan service. Also Dominic McLaughlin? Isn’t he the guy from something else…? And BDSM dynamic sounds like they’re trying too hard to make it edgy, not sure I buy the hype.
