Texas lands Junior Tu’upo safety over Alabama

Texas secured its first safety commitment in the 2027 class when 4-star defensive back Junior Tu’upo chose the Longhorns over Alabama, Oregon, Auburn and Indiana after official visits to all five finalists.

Texas’ recruiting momentum didn’t slow down on Friday—it got sharper.

The Longhorns landed a commitment from four-star safety Junior Tu’upo, choosing Texas over Alabama, Oregon, Auburn and Indiana after a recruitment that included official visits to all five finalists. At 6-foot-2, Tu’upo became Texas’ first safety pledge in its 2027 recruiting class.

Tu’upo’s path to Austin started with an official visit in June. After that trip, Texas quickly emerged as the favorite. In the decision, he pointed to the relationship he and his family built with defensive pass game coordinator and secondary coach Blake Gideon as a major factor.

That connection mattered for more than one reason. Gideon—who returned to Texas alongside Will Muschamp after serving as Georgia Tech’s defensive coordinator—spoke to Tu’upo’s value as a versatile defensive back. Gideon highlighted Tu’upo’s ability to play multiple positions in the secondary. a fit the Longhorns clearly prioritized as they built toward 2027.

For Tu’upo, the choice also came with an extra layer of contrast. He is originally from Florida. which set his recruitment apart from many Alabama prospects even as Alabama and Auburn continued to press strongly. He also flagged the city of Austin as part of the appeal beyond the football program and the university.

Recruiting rankings vary by service, but Tu’upo is consistently viewed as one of the nation’s top defensive backs. The 247Sports Composite ranks him as the No. 19 safety and No. 236 overall prospect nationally. Rivals Industry Ranking places him at No. 22 at his position, No. 256 overall, and No. 13 in Alabama.

On the field, his junior season backed up the attention. Tu’upo recorded 66 tackles. five tackles for loss. seven pass breakups and three interceptions while helping Thompson High School win a state championship. That blend of size, athleticism and production made him a priority defensive target for Texas in the cycle.

He’s also not the only key addition Texas has pulled into the 2027 class. Tu’upo is the second Alabama prospect to join Texas’ 2027 class, following four-star edge rusher Jabarrius Garror. With his commitment, Tu’upo becomes the third defensive back in the class alongside John Meredith III and Karnell James.

The timing of the pledge continued Texas’ June surge. The Longhorns landed their ninth pledge of the month, pushing the 2027 class to 19 commitments and improving it to No. 5 nationally in the 247Sports Composite team rankings.
