Harden turns down option, pushes Cleveland extension

Harden declines – After the Cavaliers reached the Eastern Conference Finals, James Harden has reportedly decided to decline his $42.3 million player option for 2026-27 and is working on a long-term extension with Cleveland.

James Harden didn’t arrive in Cleveland to hover in the background. After steering the Cavaliers to the Eastern Conference Finals, the 36-year-old guard is now setting his next move in stone—at least, according to a report.

Harden will decline his $42.3 million player option for the 2026-27 season and is working with the Cavaliers on a long-term extension, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Monday.

The timing lands in a season that already felt like a shift for Cleveland. Harden was acquired by the Cavaliers in a trade at the deadline that sent Darius Garland to the Los Angeles Clippers.

In the regular season, Harden produced 20.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 7.7 assists across 26 games with the Cavaliers. His efficiency stood out just as much as the counting stats—he shot 46.6 per cent from the field and hit 43.5 per cent from three-point range, a career-best mark from deep.

The playoffs asked for a different kind of impact, and Harden’s production dipped there compared to the regular season. But even with those numbers sliding, his presence still mattered. He helped Cleveland advance to the conference finals for the first time since 2018, when LeBron James was on the roster. That run ended with a sweep at the hands of the eventual champion New York Knicks.

For Harden, this decision also lands against the backdrop of a career that has rarely stayed still. He is a 17-year veteran and the sixth team he has played for in his decorated career. He has been traded four times in the last six seasons—so the fact that he’s now reportedly choosing the extension route with Cleveland is more than contract paperwork. It’s a clear statement that he wants the next chapter to be built, not bounced to a new address.

The Cavaliers, meanwhile, get the most important part of the equation they can ask for right now: a star guard not just planning for one more year, but signaling commitment to something longer.

  1. So he’s extending with Cleveland… does that mean Garland is gonna come back or what? Kinda confusing how they traded him off and now it’s all good again.

  2. I don’t get the whole player option thing. Like if he declines, doesn’t that just mean he’s leaving anyway? Also the article says he declined $42.3 million for 2026-27 but then he’s working on an extension so which is it lol.
