Hardaway Jr. Heat Priority Makes Knicks Reunion Unlikely

Tim Hardaway Jr.’s possible return to the Knicks just got harder to imagine. With Landry Shamet reportedly returning and the Heat treating Hardaway Jr. as a free-agency priority after the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade, the path for New York to land the 34-year-o

By the time the Knicks circle back to their bench plans, Tim Hardaway Jr. may already be gone.

Landry Shamet is coming back. and New York still has reason to look for wing depth in free agency—especially if Jordan Clarkson doesn’t return. In recent days, Hardaway Jr. had been floated as a cheap, familiar option for the kind of scoring that can stabilize a second unit. But the momentum around him now points in a different direction.

An NBA reporter, Marc Stein, reported that Hardaway Jr. is a “priority” target for the Heat. League sources also say Tim Hardaway Jr. and Mike Conley Jr. are expected to be priority targets in free agency for Miami after the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade. Stein’s report came in a post dated June 28, 2026, included in a “Sunday Best NBA Intel compilation.”.

For New York, that matters because it shrinks both timing and leverage. The idea of a Hardaway-Jim Hardaway Jr. reunion may sound convenient on paper—his quick-release. catch-and-shoot game. his ability to get hot from three. and his reputation as a solid locker room presence at age 34. But in a market where Miami is positioning him as a priority. the window for New York to make a move could close quickly.

Hardaway Jr. isn’t being judged here as a defensive centerpiece. The case for him has always been bench utility and feel-good basketball: he won’t demand many other touches. he can operate as a reserve spark plug. and he can even start if needed. Still, even with that roster-fit argument, the competition shifts fast when another contender offers a clearer path to minutes.

If Clarkson chases a bigger payday elsewhere. Hardaway would be the kind of wing option to round out New York’s second-unit rotation alongside Shamet and Mohamed Diawara. The Knicks have leaned on that kind of depth this season—stocking up on multiple options proved vital to winning a championship. with different players stepping in at different times. But the playoffs exposed how quickly roles can tighten. Shamet had moments, yet he also struggled in the postseason. Miles McBride fared even worse there, and his future with the team is described as incredibly murky.

That’s why the free-agency shopping list keeps returning to the same problem: New York needs a reliable scoring option off the bench. one that can keep stretches from turning into long dry spells. Landing a veteran like Hardaway—someone who can be had for cheap and is still seeking his first ring—fits the typical blueprint of a contender trying to extend its run.

Still, Miami’s pitch appears built for immediate impact. After the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade. the Heat are described as having limited resources to add shooting and veteran depth. but they can offer Hardaway a bigger role than the Knicks could likely provide. That difference—role size and urgency—could be exactly what pushes him away from New York.

It also helps explain why Miami could stay focused on Hardaway Jr., even with Landry Shamet coming back. Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald reported that the Heat were interested in Shamet. Losing out on Shamet only makes Miami covet Hardaway more. with an “immediate shot of offense and three-point shooting.” Free agency can still swing in unpredictable ways. and it’s possible the Heat move in a different direction. But as the information sits right now, Hardaway Jr. looks like an even longer shot for a third stint in New York—fed partly by the second-order effect of Shamet re-signing.

If New York’s bench plans were meant to include a familiar scoring veteran, the Heat’s urgency may be the reason those plans now have to change.

  1. Heat treating him like a priority after that Giannis trade sounds like they already have their plan. Knicks keep acting like free agency is a wish list but it’s not.

  2. Wait I thought Hardaway Jr. was already on the Knicks?? Like I remember him being there. But maybe that was someone else’s highlights. Either way if the Heat want him first then New York should’ve grabbed him earlier, right? Also the article says 34-year-o like they cut off the sentence lol.

  3. This is why the Knicks never get anybody in time. By the time they “circle back” he’s gone and then they act surprised. And if Jordan Clarkson doesn’t come back too, that’s just like… more panic mode for wing depth. Miami always moves quicker, not fair.
