Harbaugh insists Giants’ WR signings aren’t about Nabers

Harbaugh: WR – John Harbaugh rejected the idea that the Giants’ recent wide receiver signings were driven by Malik Nabers’s recovery, insisting the moves are separate and that New York has room for Nabers and the next group of receivers to earn roster spots.

When the questions started at Wednesday’s press conference, they were aimed at the same place the Giants’ receiver room has been converging on all offseason: Malik Nabers.

The timing looked suspicious to some. Odell Beckham Jr. returned and became the biggest headline, but he wasn’t the only addition. This week, the Giants also signed Braxton Berrios and JuJu Smith-Schuster, moves that immediately drew scrutiny from reporters. New York also suffered a setback in practice last week, with Gunner Olszewski sidelined after a torn Achilles.

Harbaugh acknowledged that injury as a “catalyst,” but he was blunt when asked whether Nabers’s ongoing recovery from last season’s torn ACL was part of the equation.

“No, I’d say it’s separate from that. Nothing to do with that,” Harbaugh said, via a transcript from the team. He pointed to the bigger picture in the wide receiver room, emphasizing that the Giants see multiple paths to competition.

“There’s room enough for Malik and whoever the next four or five receivers are. There’s room enough for all those guys.”

The Giants’ current group at receiver already includes Darius Slayton. Calvin Austin. Darnell Mooney. Isaiah Hodgins. Jalin Hyatt. and third-round pick Malachi Fields. That list makes the roster math clear: even with the additions of Beckham Jr. Berrios. and Smith-Schuster. there still won’t be enough spots for everyone once New York begins making decisions on its 53-man roster.

By the time the first training camp under Harbaugh opens this summer. competition at receiver should be more intense than the headlines alone suggest—because the roster picture is crowded now. not just “soon.” The injury to Olszewski created urgency. Beckham Jr.’s return added attention. and Harbaugh’s message made one thing equally clear: whatever comes next for Malik Nabers. it isn’t being used as the justification for these wide receiver moves.

  1. I don’t get why everyone is acting like adding WRs means it’s about Malik. Injuries happen, Odell comes back, they sign people… seems normal.

  2. Harbaugh said it’s separate but the timing is still weird. Like they’re signing JuJu and Berrios because Nabers is gonna be out till forever or whatever. Also torn Achilles?? isn’t that the same as ACL? I swear people mix it up.

  3. This roster math is gonna be a mess in training camp. They keep stacking the WR room like there’s no cuts coming, then act surprised when someone gets let go. Beckham being back makes everything look suspicious even if it isn’t. Either way, if Nabers isn’t ready, they’re still gonna need targets, so… yeah.
