A deadly hantavirus situation is unfolding on a stranded cruise ship in the Atlantic, with Misryoum reporting new confirmations and ongoing investigations.
The World Health Organization says two hantavirus cases have been confirmed and five more are suspected among people who fell ill aboard the MV Hondius, which is currently held in the Atlantic near Cape Verde.. Misryoum notes that the seven suspected and confirmed cases include three deaths, one critically ill person, and three others with mild symptoms.
Officials say the ship, carrying mostly passengers from the UK, the United States, and Spain, has 147 people including passengers and crew still onboard.. Misryoum reports the fatalities were linked to a Dutch couple and a German national, while a British national was evacuated and is being treated in South Africa.
This matters because even when outbreaks remain limited, health authorities move quickly to understand how exposure occurred and whether additional people onboard could be at risk.
Meanwhile, the WHO reiterated that the risk to the wider public is low, stressing that hantavirus transmission between humans is rare. Still, attention has turned to travel links connected to those affected.
On Tuesday, Misryoum reports the WHO said it is tracing people connected to a flight between Saint Helena and Johannesburg taken by the Dutch woman who died. Contact tracing for passengers on that flight has reportedly been initiated, as authorities work to clarify any possible exposure pathways.
The operator of the MV Hondius, Oceanwide Expeditions, said the atmosphere onboard remains calm and that screening and disembarkation planning is underway.. Misryoum reports the company is considering sailing to Spain’s Las Palmas or Tenerife, with the goal of enabling further investigation and assessment of risk for those still onboard.
Misryoum also says Spain has indicated it would welcome the ship, which would allow a full epidemiologic investigation and disinfection measures, alongside a review of the health situation for remaining passengers.
Beyond onboard planning, Misryoum reports that Dutch authorities are preparing medical evacuations for two symptomatic people, as well as for a person associated with a guest who died on Saturday.. Earlier in the timeline, a Dutch man died while the ship was en route to Tristan da Cunha, and his wife later deteriorated after leaving the ship.
At the end of the day, Misryoum highlights that the focus now is on careful investigation and targeted medical support, because better information is what helps protect both those onboard and the communities connected through travel.
