Hamilton insists he’ll stay despite people ‘trying to retire’ him

Lewis Hamilton says he’s staying in Formula 1 for “quite some time,” pushing back on the idea he could be phased out. The 41-year-old also spoke emotionally about Arsenal ending a 22-year Premier League title wait.

MONTREAL — Lewis Hamilton’s message was firm before the Canadian Grand Prix: he isn’t thinking about leaving Formula 1. Not with his contract still in place, and not with the noise around him.

The 41-year-old seven-time F1 champion. speaking Thursday. insisted people are “trying to retire” him. but that it’s not something he’s focused on. “I’m still in contract, so everything’s 100% clear to me. I’m still focused. I’m still motivated. I still love what I do with all my heart. and I’m going to be here for quite some time. so get used to it. ” he said ahead of the race at Montreal.

“There’s a lot of people that are trying to retire me, and that’s not even on my thoughts. I’m already thinking of what will be next and planning for the next five years. But yeah, I still plan to be here for some time.”

Asked about next year after an up-and-down start to his second season with Ferrari, Hamilton appeared to confirm the Ferrari deal covers 2027. He also pointed to his preparation, saying he’s already planning for the next five years.

Hamilton’s season has carried sharp contrasts. He earned his first Grand Prix podium for Ferrari in China in March, ending a wait of over a year. Yet he is behind teammate Charles Leclerc in the standings, and he has been stuck on 105 wins since his last victory with Mercedes in 2024.

For all the focus on car performance, Hamilton also brought football emotion into the spotlight this week after Arsenal finally ended their 22-year wait for the English Premier League title.

“I think, like for everyone, very emotional. I shed a tear to be honest,” Hamilton said. The last time Arsenal won the league, Hamilton was 19 years old and “a aspiring racer competing in Formula 3.”

“We’ve had so many close moments and to finally get it was, ‘wow.’ A lot of emotion came up for me, and as I’m sure for so many people. I’m just so happy and proud of the team,” he added.

Hamilton said he’s been inspired by the direction Arsenal have taken over the past couple of years. “The direction they’ve gone in the past couple of years has been just fantastic. so very inspired by what they’ve done. Really, really proud of the team. And I think they can go from strength to strength from here and only get stronger.”.

Back in Formula 1, Hamilton’s insistence on staying put sets the tone for what he wants next: not a farewell tour, but a longer runway. For Hamilton, the contract is clear, the mindset is forward, and the question now is whether his results can catch up to his determination.

  1. Good for him I guess. But didn’t he already retire like 5 times? People say “next five years” every year lol.

  2. Wait, Arsenal won and Hamilton got emotional?? That’s cool but I thought this was about Ferrari. Also “phased out” sounds like they’re trying to replace him with AI or something.

  3. Isn’t it weird he said he’s planning 5 years like that’s normal. Also I saw somewhere his contract ended already? So which one is it, 2027 or not. I’m confused.

  4. “Trying to retire him”?? That’s a dramatic way to say folks think he’s washed. And he’s still stuck on 105 wins since 2024 so like… maybe it’s not the “noise,” maybe it’s just results. The Arsenal part is cute though, I didn’t realize he cared that much about soccer, I thought he was only into racing and complaining.
