Hallgrímsson backs Brennan as teen earns Qatar, Canada call

Heimir Hallgrímsson has called up FOUR League of Ireland players for the friendlies against Qatar and Canada. Shamrock Rovers pair Ed McGinty and Adam Brennan will come in for the games, as will Dawson Devoy of Bohemians and Cork City goalkeeper Conor Brann. And Hoops midfielder Matt Healy is on standby for the games. For Brennan, who turns 19 the day after the Qatar friendly in Dublin, it’s a remarkable rise, considering he was playing First Division football with UCD last season. So what exactly
does Hallgrímsson see in the left-sided player, who plays as a wing-back for the League of Ireland champions? Speaking in Murcia as he named his 24-strong squad for the games on May 28 at the Aviva Stadium and in the early hours of June 6 in Montreal, Hallgrímsson explained why Brennan got the nod. He said: “First of all, he ticks all the boxes in our identity. He is a hard-working kid, he has good speed, both ways, he is good at running back and
defending. “He has this no fear element in him. He would just go out and every player, it doesn’t matter how old or experienced they are, he would try his luck. “He is very direct. He ticks in so many boxes. We would like to see him. And he is young as well. So if we can help him grow, fantastic.” Click here to sign up to our sport newsletter, bringing you the top stories and biggest headlines from Ireland and beyond .
