Hafley praises Achane extension as message to stars

Jeff Hafley says De’Von Achane’s four-year, $64 million contract extension sends a strong signal in Miami, rewarding a player who arrived, produced and is now staying through a second deal.

When the Dolphins’ new leadership shook hands on a four-year, $64 million contract extension with De’Von Achane, it didn’t just complete a business task. Jeff Hafley treated it like a statement to the team’s most important players.

At the start of OTAs on Tuesday. the Dolphins head coach said he was happy for Achane and confident the sides would eventually find common ground. The deal. agreed to last week. locks in the running back with a second contract as Miami continues under fresh brass. including General Manager Jon-Eric Sullivan.

Hafley pointed to what the extension represents. “I think it sends a good message when you have a player who was here on his first contract, and has produced and had success, to reward that player with a second contract,” he said. “I know that’s important to Sully and I.”

The coach made clear that leadership goals don’t become reality until the paperwork is done. With new leadership in place, Hafley acknowledged that even plans the organization talks about consistently can’t be treated as settled until the contract is complete.

Achane’s 2025 production helped make the reward feel earned. Hafley noted the running back has been around the building throughout the offseason, and he clearly enjoyed the chance to get to know one of his key offensive players as the new deal became official.

“It’s not like he just showed up after he signed his contract,” Hafley said. “So, excited that it’s done and he’ll be here going forward. He’s a great player and I’m really glad we have him.”

The numbers from last season underline why the Dolphins moved quickly. Achane led the league with 5.7 yards per carry in 2025. He finished the season with 1,350 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, and he added 67 receptions for 488 yards with four touchdowns.

With OTAs underway, Hafley’s message landed the way he intended: Achane isn’t just a piece Miami is happy to have—he’s the kind of performer the organization wants to keep building around.
