Gunfire after graduation leaves one dead in Fairfield

A shooting in the parking lot of Fairfield High School in California late Wednesday left one person dead and three others injured, prompting an active search for a shooter with no arrests reported.

The parking lot at Fairfield High School should have been filled with the easy kind of celebration that comes after a graduation ceremony. Instead, it became the scene of gunfire shortly after people finished taking pictures.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting at about 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Fairfield Police Department spokesperson Officer Michelle Belyea said the shots were fired shortly after a graduation ceremony for Sam Yeteo High School ended, when people were gathering to take photos.

Belyea said four people were shot. “One is deceased and three others are receiving treatment at local hospitals,” she told reporters. She did not provide details about the victims’ identities or the severity of their injuries.

As the investigation unfolded, Belyea said no one was in custody in connection with the shooting. She also did not provide further information about a suspected shooter’s identity or any description.

Earlier on Wednesday evening, Suisun City Mayor Alma Hernandez posted on Facebook that an “active shooter chase” was taking place in Fairfield.

A search is underway for the shooter, and the case remains in active development.
