Saturday night didn’t just end in a 9-1 defeat for the Cleveland Guardians—it also cost them time with a key bat and a key outfielder.

The loss to the Boston Red Sox snapped the Guardians’ two-game winning streak. And as the team prepared for Sunday’s series finale. the stakes were already clear: a win would have pushed Cleveland’s AL Central lead back to three games. Instead, the damage came in the final score—and in the timing of Angel Martinez’s exit.

Outfielder Angel Martinez left the game early due to left foot inflammation, according to team beat reporter Mason Horodyski on X, formerly Twitter. Horodyski reported that “The #Guardians broadcast says that Angel Martínez exited today’s game with left foot inflammation.”

The 24-year-old was in the middle of a breakout season. Martinez is hitting .243 with nine home runs and 29 RBI to this point. He’s also stolen eight bases, already matching last year’s total. That kind of production makes his absence feel sharper. especially because he isn’t only filling a role—he’s become a visible part of the lineup.

Last season, Martinez played at both second base and the outfield. This campaign, he has been exclusively an outfielder for the Guardians so far, a shift that could be tied to an improved 2026 as the team has leaned into his development.

Injuries like left foot inflammation can go either way. With this specific nature of the problem, recovery could be quick. It could also become more complicated. The timeline. at this point. is still uncertain—though one realistic path would be Martinez returning after only a couple of games. avoiding a trip to the injured list.

The issue for Cleveland is that they weren’t coming into the weekend at full strength. For a few games, the Guardians are also without fellow outfielder Steven Kwan while he is on the paternity list. With both Martinez and Kwan unavailable. Cleveland will need rookie Chase DeLauter and utilityman Daniel Schneemann to help cover the outfield workload using the Guardians’ bench.

The next stretch will test how much the division lead depends on individual availability. Can Cleveland maintain its AL Central advantage without two of its most valued contributors? The answer won’t take long—Sunday and the days that follow should make it unmistakable.

  1. So Martinez left bc of his foot but they were already losing 9-1? Sounds like bad luck timing or maybe they rushed him out. Also Kwan on paternity list makes it seem like the whole outfield is just cursed right now.

  2. Wait when you say left foot inflammation does that mean like swelling from cleats or like he stepped wrong? Because the article is saying he’s a breakout guy but also his average is .243 which isn’t like insane. Maybe they shoulda just sat him longer earlier instead of “maybe” after a couple games?

  3. I hate that they snapped the streak AND he got hurt. But isn’t this the part where everybody says “it’s only inflammation” and then he’s out for like a month? They mention avoiding the IL after a couple games but the Guardians always do the thing where they bring someone back too soon. Also who’s even playing outfield if Kwan’s not there—Chase DeLauter?? I don’t even know if he’s ready for that. AL Central lead can’t survive if people keep disappearing for random reasons.
