Griner ruled out again with rib injury for Fire

Griner ruled – Brittney Griner will miss the Connecticut Sun’s road clash with the Portland Fire again as she remains sidelined with a rib injury. The Sun enter the stretch with a 1-7 record after missing her for five of their first eight games, with Griner last seen playing

The Connecticut Sun are heading back out on the road with another obvious void in their lineup—Brittney Griner remains sidelined with a rib injury.

The Sun, already enduring a rough early stretch with the league’s worst record at 1-7, have been without Griner for five of their first eight games. Now, as they continue their current road trip and prepare to face the Portland Fire, she’s been ruled out again due to that same rib injury.

After Wednesday’s game, Connecticut will return home for a matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday, May 30. Whether Griner can finally return before then remains the question hanging over a team still trying to stabilize without one of its most important offseason additions.

Griner arrived in Connecticut as a free agent signing during the offseason, following her final years of elite production elsewhere. She spent last season with the Atlanta Dream. a year after she was in her first WNBA season that she did not suit up for the Phoenix Mercury. Before that detour, she had played the first 11 seasons of her career with the Mercury.

In the three games she has appeared in this season. Griner has averaged 15.0 points. 5.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists in a little over 27 minutes per game. Her shooting numbers include 52.9 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free-throw line—exactly the kind of impact the Sun have been forced to do without while she’s battled the rib issue.

A nine-time All-Star, Griner is in her 13th season in the WNBA. This year’s move to Connecticut is wrapped around a unique timeline: she signed a one-year contract with what will be their final year in Connecticut. The franchise is set to move to Houston beginning with the 2027 season as a rebirth of the original Comets franchise.

For now, though, the immediate storyline is clear and uncomfortable for the Sun. They’ve struggled through 1-7 while Griner has been missing in five of their first eight games, and she won’t be on the floor against the Portland Fire again on this road trip.

  1. So she’s out again… not shocking with a 1-7 record. Connecticut needs her like yesterday. Still confused though, like how is it the same rib injury?

  2. I thought Griner already came back? Maybe I saw a clip and it was like an old game or something. Also the article says May 30 vs the Sparks but I swear I saw Portland first… idk. Either way the Sun keep getting cooked without her.

  3. Feel bad for the Sun honestly. They say “same rib injury” but then mention like different seasons and all that Phoenix/Atlanta stuff and I’m just like… focus on the injury lol. If she’s only averaging 15 points in 3 games then how are they even worse? Or is that number inflated? I dunno, I just want her to play because road trips already suck.
