Google’s new Search AI agents arrive this summer

At this point, most people treat search like a one-shot task: type the query, get the result, move on. At Google I/O 2026, that habit got challenged by something different—AI agents built to keep working after you stop typing.
Google revealed new agentic capabilities in Search. letting users create. customize. and manage multiple AI agents tied to topics they care about. The aim is to go beyond the traditional “answer this question” model. Instead of waiting for a prompt. Google’s information agents are designed to operate continuously in the background. 24/7. helping people stay informed without repeating the same searches every day.
These agents aren’t framed as just a better notification. Google said that rather than delivering a list of links. the agents can synthesize information from multiple sources. explain why something matters. compare perspectives. and provide actionable insights. In spirit. they resemble the next evolution of Google Alerts—the notification service launched in 2003—but the pitch here is that the experience moves further than simple reminders.
The examples are practical and. in their own way. everyday: someone tracking the stock market could build an information agent focused on specific companies. including share prices and economic trends. The agent would monitor market activity throughout the day. track breaking news. summarize earnings reports. alert users when major changes happen. and provide summaries and links to learn more.
Google also positioned the same system for routine life updates. Users could track flight prices for upcoming trips, monitor sports teams and live events, follow breaking news, keep tabs on housing or job market trends, or track weather and traffic.
To start one, users open AI Mode in Search and enter a prompt. Google gave a concrete example: “Keep me updated on nearby movie tickets for ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu.’” When something relevant appears. the Google app sends a push notification. Users can also see their active tracked topics inside their AI Mode history. where they can jump back in to manage. refine. or turn off an alert.
Information agents will be available this summer. Google said it will first roll them out to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S., with additional markets later on.
Alongside the agent launch, Google introduced a major redesign of Search. The centerpiece is what the company described as a reimagined “intelligent search box. ” framed as Google’s biggest change to Search in more than 25 years. The new interface is designed to support longer, more conversational queries. There’s also a new AI-powered query suggestion system meant to go beyond traditional autocomplete. helping users craft more nuanced. context-aware searches.
In a single keynote sweep, the message was clear: Search is not only being reworked for how people ask questions. It’s being redesigned for what they expect to happen after they ask—ongoing updates, synthesis across sources, and notifications that show up when the world changes.
